Hey I just have new GP sports 1.4 16v a couple of weeks now and I have raked up about 700km on it so far.
Was on the moterway late at night and I decided to see what she can do so I put the foot down and I got a shock:cry: the max I could get was 140kph and 150 really pushing it!! I was looking at the specs of the car on the fiat site and the max it gives on it is 178kph which I didnt get:confused: Does anybody know anything about this?I was thinking maybe because its new ill have to wait till I have a couple of thousand km build up on it to reach that speed or will I ever reach that???

In Holland the 1.4 16v has a top speed of 180Km/H according to Fiat. But 140-150 seems a bit low to me. The top speed you describe sounds more like a 1.2 to me.

I didn't try mine -yet- but I'm at least a bit curious now.

in my active sport 1.4 8v iv had 95 out of and could of got more but i saw what looked like police up ahead...... bloody white taxis

you should really be getting about 110mph if the mk2b 1.4 was anything to go off

What are the revs at 140-150kph and are you in 5th or 6th gear?

I think I can give you a good picture, since I went out on the highway this weekend.

My GP 1.4 16v have 1500km and i can tell you the following:

The speeds of 140-150 are easy to get especially the 140....

I reached max. 170+ with 6th gear on and abt 4500 revs....

I know you may say that is too early to push it,..but I was also curius so I tested it once.....

however, the 6th gear seems a bit weak ....it's only for even road or a bit downsloaps.....when the road rise up.....you must use 4th or 5th to maintain the speed....Therefore it is possible to see only abt 140-145 if you are on 6th and the road is not even....

The engine is getting better day by day.......but of course the weight of the car is big.....

I think that the top speed of the car must be abt 180 with 5th gear on an even road....and 1 or 2 persons inside.

On the other hand the car even on the 170+ is very stable, very quiet ....and impressed my friend who is driving an Audi A3.....(y)

Generally i think the car is ok....not that fast but quick enough ....for more power,...there are options....(1.9 ...etc)

Yes you're right but does he know it?

That was my thought (but i didn't want to say i out loud :D ).

But by reading Sporty post, then perhaps top speed isn't reached in 6th gear but in 5th gear. That's why i was interested in what the revs are in 5th and 6th gear. If you reach 150kph in 5th gear at 6000rpm then you aren't going to reach top speed in that gear, but if you're only at 5000rpm in 5th, then perhaps it's possible to reach top speed in 5th.

I would say that you must not worry......the car reaches the top speed claimed by Fiat 178Km and maybe even more.....but as i said,...the road must be even.....if uphill then forget it.

As I mentioned above I got 170km and still had more to go ....but the road finished.... so I had to slow down....

But from my weekend experience I think that the best way to travel is with 6th and around 140-145Km or 5th for more abt 160+ km ....these speeds are easy to get and the car is running very comfortably...(y)

Apart fm that,.....with higher speeds you may have problems with the "smurfs" and their cameras.....

on my girlfriend's mk2 sporting (80bhp 1.2 16v 6speed) its easy to accelerate uphill in 6th on the motorway, surprisingly easy. i drive it regularly and i can overtake uphill on a motorway without dropping out of 6th gear. the car is happy to accelerate from 70 to 100 on uphill slopes almost as quickly as on the flat, 6th gear is much shorter than i expected, although at 100mph the revs are only 4300rpm. its the best thing about the car, a decent gearbox makes it so much more driveable, its like driving a 1.6. maybe you need to get your newer engines well run in first, or maybe the new 6 speed box has worse ratios such as a very long 6th, or maybe the extra weight makes the GP a bit of a slug in comparison. personally i prefer the last option as they look like slugs :p

There are 4 reasons I can think of:

1. Extra Weight ....compared to this 80hp 1.2 must be abt 200-250 kg minimum more heavy....

2. the 17" wheels .....

3. the new 6 gear box,.....the 6th drops the revs more than the previous...I think,...maybe I am wrong...

4. the engine really needs a good run in....and transforms as also some friends who have already done abt 8000km .....just have to wait and see.

Mine has about 3.500km since now. I have tested on the highway and i could almost easily reach 170km/h with me and 3 more persons in the car and the a/c powered on. So i guess you will have to wait till the engine gets loose.

My GP 1.4 16v has 6500km now.
I never had problems reaching 180km/h.
It goes smooth to 160km/h and then slowly to 180km/h. The only thing is I always reach that speed in 5th gear. If I am doing 180km/h and shift into 6th, the car goes goes back to 165km/h.

There was one occasion when I actually reached 200km/h, but it was on an even highway in Croatia and I think it had something to do with the fuel there, it must have been better that what we put here in Macedonia.

Hi, any of you guys know anything good to do to the grande punto to make it go faster?? Is there a few certain things to do to it at the start then get other things done after you got those first things done??

Cheers

Speed kills

Only 17 people killed on Irish roads in August.........this is the lowest in 10 years....... but nearly 300 killed this year so far :-(
"why the need for speed" ...........do you want to be another statistic
Slow down and enjoy your Punto please

Can reach 180 anytime,.....and one time reached 185 in a slightly downslope road......a friend says that reached 195.......
