can anyone tell me the details for the mp3 player in the punto- is it an actual mp3 player or just play mp3 cds?

Dont want to sound silly but you do mean the grande punto and not the normal punto and you havent posted in wrong section?

Depends what you buy, some of the grande puntos come with a normal CD player, then theres an option for a MP3 CD player, which is also standard on the active sport and sporting. Then theres the option of Blue&me which allows Mp3 players to connect to the car via the usb port in the glove compartment, this is standard on the sporting and eleganza versions....

Could you plug in a USB memory stick with MP3s stored on it, and play that then?

From what I have been told by the dealer, Yes.
