got a whiney front bearing, along with a bit of brake dust on that particular wheel which is more excessive than the opposite side, so it might be binding slightly too [will be, if theres any play]

so, a new bearing is cheap enough, I have somebody on hand with a press to press old one out, and new one in

other than that, doesnt look too hard? my struts were off recently so all bolts should be easyish!

any tips.....

Unstake the BIG hub nut and slacken it before you start ;)

Might need a windytool to rattle it loose :eek:

Far easier when there is a car attatched keeping it all in the one plane ;)
 
Do check the brakes, last thing you want is to quickly kill a new bearing with an over heating brake.

As charlie said. Slacken the bolt then use a big hammer to persuade the drive shaft out without risking damaging the drive shaft, then once persuaded, you can take the nut off. Be careful of a abs wires and the sensor itself

no brakes binding - I had checked this when I had that wheel off to sort my screenwash pipe, it had new pads around a year ago too that have hardly worn as well

abs and brake pad sensors will be unplugged before pulling hub carrier away

Problems, the 36mm socket I got was a bit too thick, so I had to go round it with a grinder to slim it down a bit. [it was very cheap, from china]

once hub carrier was off the car, together with the abs/speed sensor, I set out getting the sensor out, NO WAY, so its been destroyed and a new one ordered - chances are my speedo wont work, thats fine, I will just use the car for work a couple of miles away, and be slow. Disc brake will have to come off again for it to be refitted.

carrier is now at my friends garage while he presses hub flange out, bearing out, then put new one in.

no, there wasnt an axle stand, but then again I wasnt under the car either. So I will take my chances. :eek: :)

Thats why youve taken the wheel off.. to slide under there as a prop ;)

My socket didnt fit either.. luckily a lathe 'adjusted' it nicely
 
didnt have a luxury of lathe, so with socket on impact gun, mounted in vice with cable tie throttle at lowish speed, I used a grinder on it. did the job, isnt pretty, chances are it will never get used again

its all back together now, but missing the abs sensor - wont need to take disc back off to fit that, I still have speedo function.

a black cloud is looming, I think its a rear bearing thats making the noise! although from inside the car it doesnt initially sound like the rear, even the Mrs [who, and rare for the breed, understands cars and parts!] thought it was from the front n/s

I only went out for about 1/4 mile, I need to put fuel in tomorrow so I will get a decent run and able to do 40mph which was when it was most noisy, if its the back then I know I will only have to buy one bearing/hub, put it on n/s, if noise still there put the old n/s onto o/s and try again!

fix it again tomorrow

If you do a job like this take care not to strain the flexible brake hose going to caliper.
