So I serviced my car today, diesel, air, oil filters and new oil, also a new drive belt as the old one was noisy

upon starting [at idle speed], message on dash saying stop engine due to lack of oil pressure

oil was of course in it! so the only thing I could think it could be was the filter, I undone the oil filter housing to check I had put it in correct, yes all good. on these filters there is a plastic bit that clips onto the filter which has to be taken from the old one, all sorted, oil had got up there as filter was now black with oil

started again, same thing

so I put the original filter back in, and all good....

have never seen anything like that before, I have ordered another filter from ECP and pick up tomorrow, its only a 5 min job to change it

What plastic bit that has to be removed from the old filter?

I'm sure on my old 500 it had a purflux filter
And there was nothing to remove
Simply unclip the older filter from.the housing lid and push new filter into its place

Unless the lid for the filter housing with the hex socket head on is what your talking about?

for clarity here are the differences

filter.jpg

the tabs on the top of my purflux have a round plastic thing that clips into it which contains a spring [not shown], this then fits to the screw on filter housing/cap to keep the filter central and attached to the housing ready for installing the unit back in place.

it has to be transferred from one filter to another, I will get a pic of it tomorrow or whenever I switch my filters, perhaps it isnt even needed, but mine has always had it.

edit
looking at this video, the part isnt shown, I think its supposed to be held within the filter housing cap, tricky to explain without a pic

The benefit of pics :)

somebody has bumped up my last oil change [a guide] which shows the parts on the filter but here it is anyway because its related to this thread

this pic shows the filter housing and the filter as removed from car, the little plastic fitting is on the filter at this point

then we have me picking the plastic fitting off the filter

this is the housing turned upside down so you can see the insides, it has a fitting for the plastic bit to clip into

now I have put the plastic bit into the housing, its clip is broke [always has been under my ownership, so it wont stay there, it has to be put onto the filter first]

now here is the inside of an aftermkarket housing, it just has a small moulding that fits into the top of the filter, doing away with the clip altogether [I am going to order one]

so thats that, engine still runs perfect with this new filter [a Crosland] which I just put in, so my initial problem was with the oil filter bought previously which was made by ZIP Filters.

Hmm? I'm just wondering if that springy thing, apart from centralizing the filter, might just be a bypass valve? If so it's there to allow the oil to go straight through the housing "by passing" the filter element if it gets blocked up. What a lot of people don't think about though is that it can also allow oil to bypass the filter when it's cold and so relatively "thick" so that the bearings etc get an adequate supply on cold starts etc.

possibly, there is a sort of valve within it [just a metal spring down the centre, and its all plastic parts, no rubbers]

chances are its an original fiat plastic housing/cap, although it does say Purflux on it, but I reckon its never been changed. I have bought a new one anyway.

The second picture was like the filter on my 500 was both the one on the car and the replacement I got because of a small chip out of the one that came with the car

A one piece lid without separate center part
