Hi, I have a problem with my 06 plate punto.

For a while I had temp sensor error, so we replaced the sensor, that didn't solve it. So my freind who is a mechanic suggested it could be the map sensor. Before I had a chance to replace that the engine gave up. Now it won't start at all.

It just keeps clicking over.

Can't post a link to the vid I took, but I'll send the link in a DM to anyone who thinks they can help me.

Any help.would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Is the battery fully charged?...has it been struggling to start in the cold weather?...
The clicking could be the starter motor attempting to engage...

The battery was new two or three years ago.

I only use it for work, which is a mile away. Could this have affected it?

Yes, it has struggled a bit recently, then got to this point.

One mile each way..

The old rule of thumb..
It needs the engine running for 20 minutes to replace the batterys energy for 1 cold start

Unless you give it regular trips of an
hour.. 1 mile journeys will cause problems

Hi, yes. I don't cycle to work when I can. But my wife works late and most times I don't have the time.

I've spoken to a friend of mine who pointed me towards doing a test of the battery with a multimeter and is confident it is my battery.

So I'll just buy a new one.

However, I'm going to have to replace the map sensor at some point. Is this easy enough to replace on a 1.4 petrol 06 plate punto?

Thank you everyone.

Yes. The battery sounds LOW

when you turn the ignition key.. do all the usual lights come up on the dashboard?

If you had this issue in 'Sainsbugs car park'. The RAC van would use Jumpleads to boost your battery power.. and your engine would turn over and run :)

From what you have said it is just lacking in charge..
At 2.5 years old it doesnt necessarily need to be replaced.. just charged ;)

Get your friend to check the battery voltage :)
If its more than 10volts its fine.. just 'flat'

If you have space around..and family (housemates) than can assist.. even a push.start should get the car running
(But it will want to run- drive for 15 minutes or more..or you are not building the power in the battery for its next start)

ASK if you need more information :)

After thinking about it, I last changed the battery before I moved, I've lied here for 4 years now, so it's probably or 6 years old.

Tanya all the way. Been advised to get a Bosch battery.

It's definitely not OK. Can't get it started. I'll have to buy a new battery and hope that's the issue.

Sounds like it is though.

So.. what did your mechanic do in an effort to start the car?

Jumpstart..?

Your present isdue is the battery is no longer strong enough to work the startermotor.. that is the clicking noise

Connecting to a good battery on another running vehicle should be enough

Due to us having a new born and covif restrictions my friend did not come round himself, but he did instruct me to use my multimeter on the terminals of the battery.

Set to 20, the readings were;

11.80 - ignition off
9.9 - ignition on

On recieving that information he said the battery was dead and I'd need a new one.

If I could get a jump start, surely that would only be a temporary fix no?

Thanks.

If I did get a jump start and went for a good drive would that recharge the battery?

But would I not end up doing the same to my battery in account of driving short journeys regularly?

Thanks, again.

As I said before ;)

But if you are keen to spend the £80/100 then go for it.. you can keep the old battery for the summer.. give it a charge and your friend can change it with the MAP sensor

Idea:

Your car will actually RUN better with a charged battery.. your warnings of the MAP could just be because the sensor is seeing low voltage.. not an actual fault ;)

If the battery is foobarred, and I was in your position then I'd buy the best battery I could afford and a decent charger. Recharge the battery every week/2 weeks/month to keep it topped up.

Aldi have recently been selling a charger, for £10 that is digital, has the capacity to recover deeply discharged batteries and shows both amp and volt ranges. Does both car and motorbike batteries and acts as a trickle charger...
