Hello,

I have a 57 plate 1.2 active grande punto.
I've been having problems with a cold start up as previously described by others on this forum, I have since had a new battery and this is testing fine.
The Car has been starting and cutting out and taking multiple times to start, however once it has started it runs fine.
The engine management light has also become lit up on the dashboard.
i have read from numerous threads that this is likely the MAP sensor.
I was wondering whether this is easy for a rookie to clean, or whether it is best to take it to a garage.
I have read on threads that when you take it to the garage they tend to change the coolant temperature sensor, as this is what the code reader brings up, however this doesn't solve the issue.
Cheers

Throttle body is clean? Plugs, leads, coils all good and working or is that where you should start cheking?
If all electricals are working, consider the air intake manifold gaskets, if they are old and you did not changed them recently. If those are worned out, the burning chamber is not proper sealed anymore and with the low enviromental temperatures and high humidity you could get the problems you've mentioned.

Hi again :)

When it turns over cold.. does it sound 'normal' then die

Or does it splutter.. as if its not running on all cylinders

The management light on the dash means a fault code is stored

OBD Code readers are cheap.. around the price of 30 minutes in a garage.. do could save you money :)

SEARCH that code on here..
After 15 years of Grande's very few faults are 'new' ;)

MAP sensor should not be a disaster.. but again

Read YOUR code (s)

Clear what is there then drive..

See what comes back.. and in what sequence

Had exactly the same problem with 1.4 2007 GP. It would start, then cut out (from cold), but ok once it was running. Garage changed the coolant sensor (their suggestion) amd it made no difference at all. I cleaned the MAP sensor, that didn't help. So I got a cheap MAP sensor copy from eBay for £11 - really easy to fit, just one screw and a connector. This fixed the problem straight away, started first time every time. A few months later I changed the cheap MAP for a proper Bosch one, as I had an issue with a slight misfire on the engine, but it didn't help, so it obviously wasn't a MAP fault.

I read that earlier in the cars history...Thanks for the reminder.
Im fortunate enough,in this case that is that the car in question(which is owned by a friend) share a driveway with my daughters old GP. That one run's like a clock(ocd tendencies and it being my daughters car)..so I swopped the MAP sensors and....No changes.

Currently cleaning the earth points

I gotta ask...how does a MAP sensor affect the start/cold start issue?....
Most of the times the air temperature sensor which is also part of the MAP sensor shows higher air temperatures then real air temperature.
If you have OBD and MES software you can see real live values from the engine module via OBD connector and laptop.

This causes poor mixture and bad starting.
I replaced my MAP sensor already 2 times.
on aliexpress you can find replacement MAP sensor for around 10 Pound / Euro.
