Hello all and the Season's greetings!

Driving in flooded conditions the "generic failure indication" light (The amber triangle with the exclamation mark.) came on and has stayed on. The engine sputtered but did not stall and we got home safely, with the engine running OK.

The old girl is running fine now but I'd like to know if the light is indicating something that I need to put right or how can I just get rid of it somehow?

Any thoughts or ideas would be most welcome.

Charlie,

Thanks for your reply. Sorry, it's a 1.4L Punto Grande purchased new in December 2009 and serviced during the warranty period at a dealership. After that, it's been me doing the servicing and repair. I think that it's the "Sport" version which as far as I can tell has a few minor things like a little more functionality to the instrument display? Anything more under the bonnet?

I'll certainly try your remedy.

WHY you start another thread on the same issue?!
This is NOT how you use forums!

Moderators, delete his 2nd thread: https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto/484616-how-can-i-get-hold-error-code.html

PS
What do you mean by "flooded conditions"? Fuel problem (too much, rich mixture) or just driving in the rain?
"Flooded" means (in most cases) fuel (and/or exhaust system) issue in the automotive world. Slang/jargon thing.

Search OBD port on here ;)

Its partially hidden by the drivers knee

A £10 device should be capable of reading engine codes
(It may well be related to the water 'half.drowning' the motor )

Generally a misfire can trigger an error

Thanks for the replies.

Grande Punto PL: No, I've never heard of "diagnostic interfaces" / "cables" / "OBD2" but I've followed your link so thanks for that, which I'm sure will prove useful "newbie" or not!

Apologies for breaking the forum etiquette and starting a new thread. I'll make sure I don't do it in the future. Maybe the tone in your post was tongue in cheek but it didn't come out very well at my end so I'd ask you to consider this in the future.

Just to clarify "flooding", it was heavy rain causing a flood on the road.

Thanks for your post varescrazy. Very helpful. I have a few things to do on the car today so I'll have a search for the port and track a device down on line.

Here is a guide to the ports location :)

https://www.fiatforum.com/punto-evo...agnostic-port-access.html?325713=#post3242429

It shows later 199 model punto's..

But my 2007 is the same.. just a plain plastic cover ( no bin )

Further developments on the amber warning triangle.....

A second error message appeared after the amber triangle appeared. This was several days later. It was something like "Fault - running lights". A check showed up that the offside tail and front side lights had failed. Replacement of the bulbs has resulted in the amber triangle disappearing. Odd that there was a time delay between the two error messages but it's all fixed now.

I'm checking out diagnostic tools and the Gendan ones seem quite good.

Thanks for the posts.

I bought my MES from Gendan They are good people who know their subject. Before finally deciding which interface bundle to buy I must have rung them half a dozen times with "silly" questions. They always treated me in a friendly and professional manner and never made me feel I was being a bore. I've kept in touch with their Grant and we now regularly exchange views and opinions on using MES and other diagnostic subjects. You won't go wrong buying from them and being able to call on their ongoing support if needed.

Thanks for the replies.

I've contacted Grendan and it was Grant who got back to me. He suggested the Foxwell NT680 Lite Enthusiast Level Diagnostic System. It comes in at about £200 and there are models higher than this.

In a second thread on this topic (knuckles duly wrapped) there was a link

https://www.google.com/search?q=elm327+diagnostic+interface+fiat

The kit in this link was much cheaper and I assume, as you get what you pay for, the functionality of these types is limited.

The Foxwell from Grendan will, I guess, let me into a much deeper layer of diagnostics so in the long-term will save me money. I flagged up to Grendan that I had another vehicle (a Kia) and I would also use it for that.

Which model are you using and have you felt it was worth the initial cash outlay?
