Evening all so after my first post about losing my sons key it did turn up under my bed somehow lol. Any way the car is in for it first mot tomorrow since buying it about this time last year it developed a slight knock a few months back I had a mobile mechanic look at it he said it needs a new rack but iv also seen about replacing in actual inner tie rod has any had any experience with this issue thanks in advance jamie

Hi Jamie

Told you it would turn up.. :)
(and 11 months quicker than mine.. )

My 1st grande had slid on ice and clouted a kerb.. wheel was mashed..and in the boot when I bought it

It had a pronounced 'clack'

The inner joints are cheap.. same as the corsa D..

Got a local fella to fit it.. he rang me and said it was the rack.. :(

£40 for a used rack..and £40 fitting it was all good

Done 25k in it now (y)

The racks are basic... the PAS works on the steering column ;)

Hope the test goes well :)

Charlie

Obviously you could change both while its apart.. BUT the inner joint should be a 20 minute job on ramps ;)

Rack out is a couple of hours.. as it will need the PAS adjusting

What's PAS?.. I spoke to my local parts place about inner tie rods he said it could be the actual gearing IN the rack causing the knock

Power assisted steering...your gonna find out exactly what is broke on the mot...or are you wanting to sort before?..

Its booked in for tomorrow so just going to see it they fail it for the knocking maybe they won't think it's excessive still needs doing tho kind of ruins the drive Knocking away all the time

It needs addressing either way..safety etc first. If your ok with spanners, and have the time and space its relatively easy to do.
Lets hope the dont think its a major fail..let us know how it goes ...

Well I've just picked it up from the garage and went straight through not 1 single advisory there is definitely a knock there I atleast expected an advisory.

Thinking I might pop the ball joint out of the hub and give the inner rod a push and pull see if I can work out were the play is if I pull the gaiter back should I see any excessive movement?

So Been out and jacked it up gave the wheel a rock it's knocking looked further and it looks like someone has already changed the inner tie it's nice and black the other side is rusty and brown so think it's gonna be a new rack.

Take a good look at the droplinks...I struggled to identify a knocking on my own car,a Vectra. Even taking it to my fave garage...twice. MOT revealed a droplink was awol. Changed them both using MOOG kit.

Drop Links
Open the bonnet, stand at the front and get a good grip on the wing tops. Rock the car by pushing on each side in turn and get a good motion going. If you hear it you now need an assistant to touch each drop link and tell you which side is knocking.
Mine went through an MoT and they failed to find it.

I reckon it's ARB drop links as well - I got an advisory on my MoT two years ago even though I couldn't feel any play in them but had that real annoying knock. Changed the drop links and all quiet again.
