2010 fiat grande punto sound 115k.

A while ago while driving to work I suddenly had the "no FPS" error message flash up on the dash and the seat belt, airbag, triangle warning lights all came on at once and mileage started flashing after the message went away.

The lights have stayed on, the mileage is still flashing and on start up the car still shows the "No FPS" but the car still starts first time, every time and there’s no other faults.

So far I have checked:

Battery health.
Battery reads on a multimeter at 13.23v, when the ignition is clicked but car not started 12.92v, then 14.06v when the cars turning over. Everything I’ve read online says this ok?

Fuel reset switch.
It was suggested trying to reset the fuel reset switch or that it might be faulty. After taking off the plastic around both passenger and driver footwells I couldn’t find it in either side of the footwells. Don’t know if this year of punto has this switch?

Reset sequence?
In the same vain as the fuel reset switch, I tried the indicator sequence I found online and it did nothing to help. Don’t know if this year of punto uses the sequence?

Battery off for an hour
I have disconnected the battery several times while checking other things like connections and at times left the battery off for 24h and it make no changes to the lights or warnings.

Fuses.
All fuses tested for continuity both top right of engine bay and behind glovebox. Neither areas showed any signs of ingress or corrosion at all.

Earth strap
Using a multimeter I proved continuity from negative battery terminal to several points around engine bay including gearbox housing.

Unplugging and replugging seat connections?
Taking the battery off and disconnecting the seats and reconnecting it didn’t do anything. Connectors and cables look fine no ingress or corrosion.

Diagnostics plug in
Brought an elm327 adapter, connects fine with some software and finds no faults. Tried using multicausal but cannot get it to connect.

Front sensor near bumper?
I read on a different post someone had similar problems but it turned out to be a 'pre crash sensor' which should be behind the front bumper or behind top grill. Iv looked behind the grill but couldn’t find any sensor and I haven’t taken the bumper off yet as I don’t have space to take it off.

I have been through some of the other punto groups and spoken to a few people but I can’t get to the bottom of it.

The car is now getting older and mileage higher and I don’t waste money on it if I don’t have to, the MOT runs out in November (2 months) and I don’t think it’ll pass with all these lights on.
xsgPVfJ
Any other ideas or things to try would be great, as much as I want to fix the car I now just want to know whats wrong!
Thanks!

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for half an hour?

In some thread it says that bad battery / or connection/ or bad earth is prone to cause FPS fault to be displayed.

What's the real voltage after a day of inactivity? Normal battery voltage reads 12,3-12,9 depending on how new it is. And when ignition is on, it's about 12V. Your battery could have an internal shortcircuit and it's going to fail soon. If on the other hand you measured it shortly after shutting down the engine, then do the measurement again in the morning.

The car is probably fine and has only a minor fault, bad battery or battery terminals. How old is the battery?

Hi Eeeno,

Thanks for your advice, I had to wait for a day that I didnt use the car to check.

I tried having the battery dissconected for half an hour and the problem didnt go away.

I took new readings of the battery using a mulitmeter, this is what I found:

-Battery taken out of the car after not being used for 24 hours reads 12.78V.
-12.47V with the igition on but car not started.
-14.08V once the car was started and idle.
-13.02V after the car was turned off after idling for around 5 mins.

The battery is about 3 years old. The idicator rings shows as healthy.

Iv also managed to finally borrowed a bigger and newer battery from a diesel to test with and the problem still shows.

Just in case anyone comes across this problem in the future, heres what the fault was.

The crash computer below the center console under the cup holders had complelty failed. Thankfuly a replacement one was fitted and everything is sorted.

Hi Nickr512,
Could you please help me with some details about your solution for this problem?
I have all the same symptoms in my Fiat Grande Punto 2013 (1.3 TDi).
Maybe you can share part code which you replaced or maybe some guide/photo of `crash computer` which you mention?
It's really important for me and I'll be super appreciate if you could help me.

I believe it's called the airbag ECU if I've not completely mistaken.

What symptoms are you getting?

eeeno thanks for advice,
varesecrazy thanks for reply,
I have:
1) noFPS error
2) blinking odometer value
3) seat belt warning lights (both don't hide even when you're fastened) (red)
4) airbag error (looks like passenger bag) (yellow)
5) triangle warning light (yellow)
6) incomplete main menu (only 4 items: speed limit, time (without date), buzz (sound volume) and distance unit (km/miles))
Nickr512 in title describe errors from 1 to 5 and it looks like airbag ECU is solution. Isn't it?

I read that as 2 faults..

A display error
Airbag system warnings

To save spending a LOT of money on a replacement Airbag Module

I would get the vehicle scanned.. the error codes should give a better idea of what problems are likely to be your issue

As suggested above, have the codes read and diagnosed. If it shows codes from multiple sources, it may very well be bcm (body control module) or/and can-bus related wiring fault.

I got two different report with error codes. First was provided to me by service station:
- U0422-81 ECM
- B10AA-4A BCM
- U1726-87 SDM
Second was created by myself (I bought elm 327 and checked car with different tools):
Car Scanner ELM OBD2

Previously it was the Airbag ECU which needed changing.
