Hi im new here?

I am based in Hartlepool (North East England) and have a fiat grande punto.

Just looking for some guidance really regarding my gearbox box and selctore cables as last week my downwards gears failed (2nd, 4th and reverse). However I had a mechanic out last week and they were saying my gearbox had gone one minute and then the next minute he was telling me i just needed new selctor cables due to general wear and tear.

I have decided it would be best to replace both the gearbox and cables as knowing my luxk5id replace one and it would be other ?.

Can anyone give me pointers on how i could do this as cheaply as possible and whether it would be worth the money or not as dont really want to have to replace the car completely ?

Many thanks

Unless the gearbox had run low on oil, it's probably just a selector cable & selector fault. Get the selector mechanism changed and transmission oil changed. Also have the clutch function and hydraulics checked. Is it disengaging properly?

Only after fixing those you'll be able to know whether or not it is a gearbox fault if the problem persists. And that is going to cost more. You have good chances that it's just a selector fault. Gearboxes don't fail that often. (y)

Gearbox swap? Come on "mate"...
Renew the linkages/cables only. Then you can decide what's next (car fixed or not).

Gearboxes do fail sometimes (internally), but cables are most common issue (then axles, gear selectors - in the cabin and on the gearbox, mount/s - like "dog-bone").

PS
Which engine/gearbox? Fiat (C-series) or Opel (M-series, like infamous faulty M32 - Google that)?

Yeah it was disengaging properly and thank you for the advice. I will give it a go

It is a 1.2 active. I will defiantly try changing the cables qnd see if that works. It was just more annoying that the mechanic was saying it was the gear box one minute and the next minute he was telling me that it was the cables that needing to be done
