Hi, I hope everyone is doing well.

I have a Fiat Grande Punto 1.3 Multijet 75bhp 55kw and while going up in gear, let's say 3rd gear 30-40 mph speed the engine starts juddering and it transmitting it over to the gearbox and the whole car starts to shake. I also need to mention that while idling I slowly accelerate it and keep it around 1100 - 1200 rpm and I feel a small unusual shake.

So far I have changed all the engine mounts, put the car on a tester and it did not give any faults. The wheels are balanced and the driveshafts are in good working order. After trying all the possible options ,one thing the mechanic I went told me that it might be the flywheel.

I did read around the forum but mostly were engine mounts, driveshafts and cv joints.

I feel like I am that point where the car does not deserve anymore investment and would just like to buy another.

Has anyone of you faced this kind of thing so far ?
Many thanks.

Is your rpm is steady during this?

Hi Chris, when i first start the engine and it's idling the rpm goes between 900-1000 and eventuallly it goes steady.

While driving the rpm always remains steady.

While driving the shaking only starts happening when I start touching the acceleration pedal. If I let the car go downhill, in gear, without touching the pedal everything seems normal.

When I start driving the car in 1st gear you can hear somehow like a grinding noise, going 2nd gear you can start feeling the juddering/shake of the car while going over 2000rpm, 3rd gear is the worst as the car starts shaking a lot. It also happens in 4th and 5th gear but the shaking seems to feel more steady as the speed gets higher. You can still feel it but a lot less than in 3rd gear. The worst shaking happens when you are going up a hill.

thanks for your help so far.

Changed the flywheel and clutch. The old clutch and flywheel were in a good condition.

The problem is still there. The mechanic has said that this might be a cranshaft issue.

Has anyone got anymore ideas ?

Thanks

Rev it up to 3000-4000 rpm when stationary with the clutch down so no connection to the gear box does it still shake? If it’s just when you’re driving along it could be a number of components causing the vibration

I had the same issue and it was the driveshafts, 1.3 Mtjet 75ps as well. I put both new and shaking disappeared. I had as well an engine mount destroyed, the one in the back. Hope it helps

Ive had a bad pulsing on my 07 mj :(

Got gradually worse over months @5,000 miles

I changed an inner tripod..and it was improved

Not driven car much since..

But it should be road speed ( and load) dependent

30 to 40 mph is typical.. whichever gear..

Dipping clutch will reduce it.. its LOAD dependent ;)

done this and around 1200-1300 revs an unusual shake is happening. So i keep it steady at this interval and it's doing it constantly. When going over these number of revs , everything seems fine

If it is load dependant my bet is for driveshafts based on my experience
mechanic said the drive shafts looked fine. spent already 600£ on all this but havn't changed the driveshafts yet. so this might be the last resort.

I don't feel like spending anymore money on the car.

If there were some sort of major imbalance in the engine, I’d not expect things be normal once you get above 1200-1300 is only just out of idle really. An imbalance would get worse and worse the faster the engine got.

1200-1300 rpm could just be a misfire or just having a bit of a shudder as you rev it from idle.

I notice on 1.4 8v small shaking of whole car on idle (without A/C ON). It has 700rpm on hot idle and engine is shaking. I feel it on steering wheel, pedals. Once I turn on A/C, rpms are going up to 720 and shaking disapear.
And when I quickly rev up engine from idle, it shakes once with whole car, abd then shakes again when it reach 700 rpm back.
Dont know if main engine mount is wrong, or dog bone. Both looks ok by eye, but I saw on main mount that theres space appr 1,5 cm between upper metal and rubber...I have no experience with these mounts.
No issues while driving on any rpm

THIS IS THEORETICAL..
TREAT WITH CAUTION !!

15 years ago we had a poor vibration .. on a FIAT diesel.. diesel noise made it tricky to narrow down

So.. I raised the front of the car..so ZERO road noise..wheels in the air

I stood towards the drivers side wheel.. the DRIVER went up to 50mph ( not moving..)

I heard nothing.. the DRIVER heard LOTS

They heard and felt the vibration... so we could diagnose which corner :)

YOUR CAR :

IT SHOULD.. be possible to raise your car and do the same
It needs to be VERY SECURE ( axle stands and a 2nd line of support .. to 'catch' it)

(A blip of the throttle in 5th gear took it from 25mph to 110) no resistance

If you get very limited vibration at the speeds of your current speeds.. you will appreciate your issue more ( this is very limited load..)

AGAIN.. THIS HAS POTENTIAL TO GO WRONG..

ACT WITH THOUGHT

let us know if you make any further progress :)

Hi guys,

My 1.4 8V 2013 is shaking on operational temp at idle (700rpm, VVT, Euro5). When I turn A/C , rpms are going up to 720 and theres no shaking. I feel shaking of whole car on hot idle, in steering wheel, seats, everywhere. I opened bonet on idle and watched engine movement when I quickly press gas pedal, engine shaked once "forward and then back". Also when I quickly accelerate for example on 3rd gear, it shakes with car, and when I release gas pedal, it shakes again.
So based on this quickly method it looks like dogbone engine mount has broken rubber.
I didnt eye inspection yet, just to want your opinions/experiences.
What I saw on pictures, this dogbone is made by 2 parts? One looks like "triangle" with some rubber bushings, and 2nd part is dogbone itself...is that correct please?
Or how to simply diagnose if main engine mount is bad, or lower (dogbone) is bad? My main mount has space between upper metal part and rubber part approximately 1,5cm. Is it ok? I'd like to diagnose it before creeping under car to dismaount dogbone...so any info is helpful here guys! Thx ;-)
I changed dogbone on 2 previous cars, but on one car there was also shifter movement back and forth, and on 2nd car I heard metal bang, so it was easy to identify bad dogbone...
Maybe I can shake engine via oil pan back and forth, and see movement around dogbone...this looks to me like easiest method...?

Axle stands and two jacks just touched the car would probably be okay if you have two jacks anyway

When my mj dogbone failed.. you could just grab the top of engine.. and rock it towards front and rear...
It was wrecked.. no rubber left in the dogbone.. and new one was @£20 :)

Hmmm I grabbed engine from top side, but I almost didnt move it. Because dogbone is lowest mount, I think I must push engine through oil pan. I'll try it soon and let ýou know guys
