Hi guys,

First post for me in this forum, so thanks for your help in advance :)

I'm experiencing a very loud noise in the left side of the engine, service belt and time chain side.

It barely does it when it's cold and it gets much louder when warm.
Also it's much more noticeable at idling rpms than accelerating.

Here is the video where I hope you'll be able to hear it.

I've tried a mechanic and he suggested me to change car LOL and that it was possibly the timing chain.. today I'll have a look if I can find another one.

Many thanks .

Tbh I didnt know these had chains...I thought they were belts.

I have had belts, water pump and tensioner changed on two seperate GP'S.

Whats the service history like?.

It's been serviced in march, and replaced the alternator (with a Denso one) in April.

I had i for 7 years with no major problem, it's a 1.3 90bhp 2006 model, with 90k miles, I should have had specified it actually.

Water pump has been changed a couple of years ago.

I was reading that since is mainly doing when idling and increasing it when warm that it could be the catalyst converter??

I know it's hard with just a video...

But have you had the timing belt AND its tensioner changed?..if indeed yours has a belt...

Is it a petrol or diesel?...

If you think it could be a failing cat have you considered having the emissions tested?

It looks like something from auxilary belt - take long screwdriver and listen alternator, AC pump and tensioner noises. 2nd video - it looks like front spring (broken spring or it's bad upper or lower seat). Hard to say, noises like this could be from 100 parts...

Thanks for the reply, i thought the 1.3 90bhp was only a diesel version, anyway it's a diesel, and no the timing chain has not been replaced as I've been told no need to up to 250k km.

Emission test is an option although it passed the MOT a month ago, it's something that it can be done if needed, if it was the cat or the heat shield I believe just shaking the exhaust would show it? something for a mechanic anyway

Appreciate please my questions were in an effort to try and help..my ignorance I guess.

I drive a 2 t Vectra, but work on 2 GP's..petrols...the chain on my 2t isnt supposed to require changing according to Vauxhall BUT they do fail.as do the tensioner.

Absolutely :) thanks for your help, I'm pretty ignorant to be honest on mechanical stuff, I've learnt to work on the MX bike ( not the engine ) as it's needed on a day out but on cars I'm quite bad :)

I think the main point is that the noise is louder when warm and mainly when idling so just trying to figure out what it could be, and if there is something I can verify myself.

I don't really have a trusted mechanic and the one I've found didn't show me much knowledge to be honest.

I have two 2t's..Being aware of the potential for chain failure when I travelled 50 miles to see the second one I specifically told the dealer that I wanted the car left alone and a cold start.
Sure enough when I got there it'd been moved. I made my feelings known and advised them that IF the engine was noisy on a cold start id be back,a very unhappy man.
Sure enough the next morning ..it rattled like it was going to implode.
After various conversations the car was repaired,by Vauxhall under warrenty.
£1200 pounds later it turned out to be a broken tensioner.
Replaced,along with the chain.
So if it rattles when its cold.but goes away when warm it 'could' be the chain and/or tensioner.Operative phrase is 'COULD '..

Thanks :) but actually it't the opposite, it rattles much more when warm and it's ok when cold.

It is 1.3 with chain. same engine as on opel corsa. Bu from what I can hear from the video
it has more of a hissing sound like a cracked exhaust manifold or something in this sence.
The chain would have a more klanky rattling sound. I don' think the two are related,

Sorry for my 1st post in this thread, I listened that YouTube video on very bad earphones at work :) Now I hear what you mentioned :)

So, I went to a friend mechanic and we took down the aux belt as he thought it was the water pump, but it's still making the noise, so at this point it could be something to do with the exhaust or the timing chain...
