It’s not illegal to work on your own air con system.

Due to Robert’s claims I contacted the environment agency, the jist is you only need accreditation if you are performing gas recovery tasks with gas recovery equipment.

The cost of the equipment to work on (gas and degas) your own aircon systems are high so these tasks are always best left to someone with the right kit,

In the UK, without accreditation, can I legally pump the gas out of my car using any approved method, change the pressure stat and then pump the same gas back into my car?

So it seems you CAN pump the gas out of your system but you CAN'T pump it back ?? If so, what a non-sense !!
I bet things will go better for You Guys once Brexit'll be done ...

Cheers, Bernie.

Bernie, from reading the legislation it is clear you cannot pump the gas out.

You need accreditation even to do a leak test without dismantling!

so I am back wondering whether I should do my condenser, looking through the grille at it the fins are mullered and hanging out

I am furloughed at the moment so have time to take it apart

theres no pressure in it, kwik fit vacuumed it last year when they did the vac test prior to gassing [which they didnt do]

It falls under f-gas legislation it I remember correctly whichs applys to the recovering and handling of CFCs and HFCS which is most air con gas
Strangely the self serve refill kits have some sort of exception so can be used without the relevant qualifications

Because the rules apply to recovering the gas. Once the system is void of gas then you can work on it to your hearts content.

you can't regas an empty system with a "top up" kit the clue being in the name. you need to have a vacuumed system with the appropriate amount of oil added to refill an empty system.

if you are "topping up" then the system is not empty and assumed to be a sealed system.

No sane person is going to spend £70 a time repeatedly topping up a system with a significant leak. So top up kits are perfectly legal and i have checked this directly with relevant department after Robert accused me of breaking the law in using a top up kit (that I bought from a high street store) in a video.

In levemircento case the system is empty and apparently has been vacuumed out so there are no restrictions on him working on his condenser, When it is done it will need leak testing and refilling properly. I'd always recommend changing any O-Rings that you disturb while working on it as they can flatten and become brittle and dry after years in place, if you're paying to refill the system a few pence for )-Rings could save you a fortuned in leaked gas. Also when getting any system filled get some UV dye added, just in case later down the line you do get a leak it makes it much easier to find. (y)

If you have an obvious hole or leak in the system and it doesn't work then there is little point taking it to a specialist to have the gas sucked out. All you risk in this case is sucking damp air into the normally closed and dry system. Far better to do the repair then have a long vacuum hold done afterwards by an air con specialist, to boil off any moisture in the system.

I will be wanting to buy new O Rings in advance so have contacted an aircon suppliers [for cars] to see if they have the right ones, I cant find an OE part number for them, or even dimensions.

I need to get bumper off to get access to the old condenser, I am going to change it should it be at fault - very likely given what I can see through the grille - and if, after replacing it, and having it charged at kwikfit again, well if it doesnt work then thats that, it would have been a nice feature to have and the only system on the car to not work.

very likely given what I can see through the grille -

Get a cheap UV light, and carefully go over the whole condenser (preferably in the dark) and over all the pipework you can see. Hopefully someone will at some point have put some dye in the system and this will usually tell you where the leak has come from.

All I changed was the condenser, that’s not to say I have correct terminology, so if you look at these pics you can see the parts, old and new that’s it in it’s entirety as supplied, only needed to bolt to car, insert x2 metal pipes and do up the clamp, hope that helps. IMG_5250.JPGIMG_5244.JPG

thanks, I have contacted a seller who I will probably buy a condenser from and the drier is part of it, in both of your pics it is enclosed in the tank thing on the end of the condenser

I asked about it because my fiat grande punto elearn manual says to take the drier part out of the condenser. But I dont need to if a new one comes with it pre installed.

I had a go at bumper removal over a week ago, the top and bottom screws are all easily removable but the top outers just inside the bumper just rounded off right away, so I just put the screws back in that I did get out and am going to give up on getting the AC working now, if at any point in the near future I have a proper good reason to take bumper off then I will attack with power tools, and review.
