Morning all,

really weird question. had an alternator fail on a 2007 1.4 8v grande punto. replaced it and the alternator was fine, however now the battery light still comes on intermittently. 99% of the time it is every other turn of the ignition, but after a long drive or listening to the radio with car turned off for example it takes a couple of starts for it to appear again. turning the car off and then on again cures it, even without moving. the battery light never comes on while driving and there is no weird noises like before.

two questions, first is will this fail the MOT? and second what the hell is causing this random problem?

cheers all
Andrew

I can only offer three things...the alternator, now 12 years old could be failing..the alternator belt itself could be failing, the battery is an unknown quantity in this thread..how old is it?..whats the condition of it?..

Id go to Halfords for a free battery/alternator test and go from there..

So been to Halfords and the battery, alternator and starter check out fine, both with and without the battery light on.

The alternator is about 6 months old,
New alt belt last year
Battery is a yuasa one that's about 1 year

Earth return has been checked and comes back as 11.67v with Batt voltage as 11.97v

I'm drawing a blank here, anyone got any other ideas??

11,97V is way not enough for an healthy battery ...

Since one cell is normally 2,1v fully loaded, you should read 12,6v at the battery terminals (engine stopped, contact OFF, or -better- one lead removed)

How has the earth return been checked ??

BRs, Bernie
