Technical 2007 GP cutting out

I thought I would start a new thread since I kind of hijacked an older one (and I don't think the issue is the immobiliser/bad earth now).

A bit of background - I gave the car a service about a week ago, oil, filter and air filter. I also have the throttle body a wipe while the airbox was off. The car was running fine for about a week, and then I started to have issues.

The issue is, intermittently the temp needle will sweep up to max, and then back down, sometimes killing the power and other times it stays running. The car will cut out relatively soon after starting/moving (I can't even get as far as out of my car park). Have I maybe disturbed a sensor, or maybe a sensor needs replacing?

I think I'll take the airbox back off and just make sure there is nothing obviously wrong. Any steers in the right direction would be appreciated

If it didnt do this before you serviced it its a fair bet that it could be something you have done...or a massive coincidence.
When you say you 'wiped' the throttle what do you mean?..
Have you checked for any stored fault codes?..

Yeah, but it was running fine for a week? In fact, better than before (although that could have been post-service placebo).

You know the TB gets a bit oily/gunky? I wiped it with some blue roll.


I actually haven't checked for fault codes, but I'll google how to do that now, cheers.

I would consider using a carb cleaner spray to clean the throttle body and throttle plate. I also use a toothbrush. You can then actually scrub the body itself and both sides of the plate.

I know that some cars have the issue of the temperature gauge sweeping across the dial on start up which is fixed by going to get it reset by a dealer etc on diagnostic kit.

Thanks again for your replies. I'm going to get some carb cleaner as it won't do any harm, I cleared a lot of gunk away but there is still a lot 'baked on' if you know what I mean.


In terms of reading fault codes, would something like this do? I'm thinking I'm better spending the 20 quid or so myself rather than paying someone 100.

IF you havent got any carb cleaner you can also use brake cleaner.I have in the past with no issues.

RE fault codes the puka diagnostic kit is MES..plenty of info on here about it

Just an update from me in case there is any interest... I had 1 error code (P0115 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit) and after a quick search of the forum, replacing the MAP sensor seems to be what to do next?

So...you managed to successfully identify an error code...research advises to replace the MAP sensor....hmmmmm...I would..

Out of curiosity what did you use to id the fault code?...

I'd also check coolant temp sensor I had the same code around 18 months ago. new temp sensor fixed it.

Don't know what engine you have but the 1.2/1.4 8v engine its a fairly simple job to change it. I had similar issues with the temp gauge too. I didn't have the cutting out though.

Why would you replace the Manifold Air Pressure (and temperature BTW) sensor when the reported error is about the coolant temperature's one ?? The MAP semsor has a built-in NTC that you can check with an ohm-meter, it's easily removable and can be cleaned with carb or brake cleaner, which won't certainly hurt !

I have realised that Im fairly lucky in that I have a very good relationship with my local breakers who happen to have a few of these cars coming in on a regular basis...so parts are very cheap,to me.Hence I tend to be lazy in as much as I replace and if it dont cure the issue invariably i get the money back. As Im also retired it keeps me busy too.

Like I say, I googled the error code and searched on here, and people reckon it's the MAP sensor. I've ordered both anyway!
