Leakey radiator? Whatís this pipe

On Saturday afternoon treated the car to an oil change, gearbox top up and reset dpf counter. Every year I see a pipe that is gradually corroding and have it on my furniture to investigate list. I am aware of a tiny bit of coolant loss. As I fitted the undertray back I noticed a bit of water under the radiator but as it has been raining brushed it off.

This morning went out on my bike, small puddle at the front left as you look from the front of the car, distinct paraflu hint of colour, so I accept I have a leak. I assume it is from the radiator and running itís course to the lowest part but what is the big metal pipe maybe 3/4 inch diameter which is basically level with the bottom of the radiator and behind the bumper and slam panel, it looks like it is part of the intercooler pipework, if so I will remove and repair as needed if it just air inside, if it rusts through though where do the bits go and what side of the filter are they, Eper doesnít cover my car and I canít see the pipe for sale anywhere.

It is metal large in diameter and tomorrow after work I shall investigate the leak further, the radiator doesnít seem expensive and Iím assuming the water is just running over the pipe Iím talking about possibly adding to the corrosion of it. Iím asking with out all the info but I will strip it tomorrow and if required stick a pic of the pipe on here, thank you.Click image for larger version

Re: Leakey radiator? Whatís this pipe

Itís the 1.6 mjet, but Iím assuming that the pipework is the same, but thatís great news as the only place water could come from an a dry day is the radiator. I shall investigate that pipe to night my concern is if it rusts through will my turbo be exposed to forgiven bodies, I shall also order a radiator once Iíve checked tonight, thank you for your reply.

That pipe is on the high pressure (output) of the turbo, so no worries about foreign bodies getting swallowed, but if you're getting hole(s) in it, you'd lost (some) boost pressure...

Re: Leakey radiator? Whatís this pipe

Thanks Bernie, I checked the pipe tonight and it is solid metal, whilst it is a bit rusty it seems structurally sound so I shall attend to it when I put a new rad on, on my golf I can change the rad faster than the kettle can boil, requiring two tools, having had a brief read I look forward to removing my bumper just for starters lol.

Head-lights, upper crossmember and front bumper; that's all you need to remove to access the radiator fittings...

Enjoy ! BRs, Bernie
