I have looked round the car and couldnt see 'it'...the car isnt mine, but a friends.
We have had a long standing(12 months) niggle with an eratic tickover. The car throws the occassional 'phutt' type sound BUT drives well pulling cleanly through the revs/gears.
Plugs and leads have been changed, twice. Differing coil packs have been tried another MAP sensor. Plugs are/were unburnt and a clean tan colour which i have always took to be a sign of a good running ignition system.
All seemed to initially clear the problem..but it reoccurs.
A new exhaust system and full service was recently carried out.
Its been MOT'D recently and only just passed the emissions.

I know it should be put on a FIAT scanner BUT she wont stump up the £40 and is rapidly loosing faith in the car...Hence the ask.

Looks like the fuel vapour cut out solenoid valve (item 12).
Could be iden below the intake manifold or anywhere in the engine bay (follow the pipes), and if not working properly give erratics engine behavior !

Thank you Bernie..at the least ill know where to look now.:)

That valve allows (or not) fuel vapours to be swallowed by the engine, so it is partly responsible of the correct air/fuel ratio, don't ask what 'd happen if it doesn"t work properly...

Ermmm....misfire?...

Could very well be, see attached a closer picture and the "how it works" from e-learn ...

Bernie...is 14 the fuel filter?..where can I get a copy or access to the diagrams etc?...

Nope, it's the charcoal canister, the filter is buil-in the pump's body. All (almost) the drawings and views I attach are extracted from e-Learn. I also grab some of them when surfing and finding one interesting.

In the meantime I found this one about the fuel vapour valve (4b)...

Now to try and orient my head to try and work out the perspective/placement..

That's the most difficult part with those "drawings". We can guess a transmission shaft, and maybe the steering rack, so I'd concentrate in this area, between the engine and the firewall, underneath the manifold...

Tell us when you've found it (pictures maybe ?)...

If you follow the blue pipework towards the rear of the engine you'll find the part.
Been speaking to a specialist breaker who has helped me out. He sells a 'lot' of these apparently.
When the cars next here I'll have a look ....
Thank you for the help given .:worship:

So...I fitted a second hand idle control valve..and ...it now idles smoothly.
After 12 months of trying different things a £3 part has finally cured it and my friend has a massive smile on her face.
And my sanity is finally restored..well almost

In the pictures you can see the location of the ICV..Its on the right hand side of the engine behind the two maid harness, red clips.
The first one shows the blue line ,which has 2 yellow sides that you push in to disconnect the air line. There's also a black electrical connector that unclip's.

Once you have removed these you will see a big metal clip that is a spring clip.Pull it off and be careful not to drop it into the engine compartment..
Once removed the unit slides out ..again be careful not to loose the two o rings that seal it.

I unclipped the big red clip to move the harness to move it out of the way.

Tbh its a relatively straight forward job..hardess part was refitting the clip.

HTH ..

The ebay picture/advert is the part fitted..only I paid £3 for it from my local breakers.
The place/owner is a goldmine of information. All his parts are tested prior to posting...I'm not on commission but I would happily recommend his services.
Only reason I didn't use his services is because I have used my local breakers for the last 37 years, and they are my first go to place,BUT should I need an alternative then they would be my second choice.
