!.4 Grande Punto Backfiring on start when warm.

Good morning,

My good lady has recently bought my daughters 2005 1.4 77hp Grande Punto.

I took it for a spin when I came back from being away and found that it backfires on start up when hot, backfires when changing from first to second when hot and makes noises when reversing uphill into a parking slot. It did not do this when I took it for a drive a month ago.

It has had a new exhaust fitted last week.

I ask the peanut gallery what could be the issue ?

I have to go away again tomorrow and it would be nice for her to have some idea what it might possibly be before she phones the chap who fitted the exhaust.

Purely for the benefit of her being able to sift through any potential layers of bull which may be sent her way by the chappie with the spanners.

Re: !.4 Grande Punto Backfiring on start when warm.

I've just been out for a spin in it and here's what I think might be going on.

The exhaust is new all the way up to the piece with the cat on it, which hasn't been touched.

When I reverse and the engine is cold there is no funny noise.

When the engine warms up it starts to make popping noises from the exhaust.

I think the join at the front to the piece with the cat on it is leaking when the exhaust warms up and allowing air into the exhaust and makes any unburnt fuel ignite. It only pops on start when hot and changing up gears.

It only makes noise when reversing uphill when its hot.

Could it be that the chappie who fitted the exhaust hasn't used the correct Fiat mounts (I read that may be an issue on another thread) and that the exhaust isn't a perfect match or the flexi pipe is too short ?

What do you reckon ?

Re: !.4 Grande Punto Backfiring on start when warm.

Poor fitting aftermarket exhausts and/or poor fitting causes no end of problems across the board.
As I said earlier,go back and ask them to check the exhaust..maybe too early to see any carbon staining where its leaking but its what id do.
Well done for spotting it too

Take it back to the garage that fitted the new exhaust first, its gauranteed by law.

Did you get this sorted? I fitted a new exhaust to my daughter's 1.2 using an aftermarket generic gasket which lasted 2 days. I have now ordered the correct metal gasket. Fingers crossed

Aye Bern' apart from learning information that may help others in the future, it's plain good manners to the friendly forum members that try to help.

Sure! And the FiatForum is not the worst ...

I'm on the (French) Scirocco one as well: lots of unsolved issues (no replies) and almost no feedback when(if) issues were solved :-( Is it Italian spirit that makes the difference?

BRs, Bernie

Sounds like its drawing air.. as you suggested.

Being temp. related.. sounds like a mismatch in tube sizes

Reversing.. the motor swings under torque load.. this change having an effect means the issue is within a short distance of the flexi region.
