General 1.2 8v sump plug leak

General 1.2 8v sump plug leak

The steel sumps tend to have a tapered thread on a PLUG.. that should be self.sealing

Other cast sumps tend to use a BOLT..and seal.. As it is more tolerant of over torque abuse ;)

Well said Charlie, a tapered (conical) plug won't be used in cast sump because it can really break the sump if overtightened, and honestly what's better than a sacrificial ring of soft copper ?

Update, its a fail, the plug still leaks, I did however order one from Shop4Parts, I’ve took this BGA one off and fitted the genuine fiat one, hey presto it snugged up tight and didn’t feel like it was going to go all the way into the sump, and there’s no leaks (had the car running for 30mins)

Thanks for all the Info, 1 thing live learnt is I’ll make sure I buy genuine fiat parts for stuff like this

Good.

Shop4parts supply correct parts.

Thats a shame :(

Shop4parts generally supply correct parts.
Pardon me if I'm misunderstanding, but I think he's saying that the S4p plug has solved the problem? "took the BGA one off and fitted genuine Fiat one" (presume this to be the S4p supplied item?) "Hey presto it snugged up tight etc and there's no leaks". - don't you think?

Correct, Shop4Parts plug solved my issue, Time to move onto the next problem, I suspect the gearbox selector seal is leaking☹️

Sump is steel, not cast. Plug is tapered. I can only speak for 1.2 8v engine though.

thanks for the heads up, a tapered sump plug, maybe time to invest in a sump suction device to change the engine oil then....

Thay are great.. self.sealing :)

No messing with copper washers etc

But do they suck as much crap as would a plug drain?

I was comparing plug : bolt

Pumps I am inconvinced..

But if you have patched up a damaged drain plug( bonded in place)

Then they will save you time and money.. leaving the sump sealed.
