So guys. Just picked up a dirt cheap 09 Plate Grande 1.4

Cheap because its cooked itself badly. The oil is burnt. And melted the inlet manifold so I know it's a goner.

So question is.

# will a 1.2 engine run on the current ECU. So making a 1.2 transplantable.

I have a spare 1.2 grande engine so thought I'd try this before searching for a 1.4 engine.

Has any one done this before? Will it run?
I'm willing to give it a bash if it's not been done before.

I've plenty of experience of exchanging like for like so an engine swap doesn't fade me.

So guys is it possible?

Same type of engine (8v or 16v)?

If yes... i'd have a look at the different sensors and compare number, location..etc
Engine should start..and work... no idea how it would behave on full load (rich/lean)

Yes both 8v engines.
I'll have a look at sensors etc but I'm confident they share the same loom..

Hi Mike,

I just compared the engine management drawings and I can only find N076 not present on the 1.2 version. That's the phase transformer actuator and it will pop-up the MIL if not connected. You could fool it by connecting the broken engine's actuator ...

Beside that, I have no clue about the engine mounts and gearbox ...

Are you referring to the sensor protruding from the back of the rocker cover by the oil filler cap.
If so these can be swapped over.

See pic of example of sensor present on 1.4 but not 1.2

Please see above

That look like the Variable Valve Timing (VVT or Phase Transformer) electro-valve indeed.
How can you swap something that's not present? Is there room for it on the 1.2 engine ??

Whole engine is one thing, cabling another thing - f.e. camshaft position sensor - on 1.4 is on opposite side of engine, on 1.2 on timing belt side. The problem will be ECU - because for 1.4 it measures difference between crankshaft and camshaft positions during engine load (VVT) and signal must be correspondent to concrete rpms. If not - you'll receive engine light (incorrect VVT function). If there's possibility to disable VVT system in ECU completely, maybe it should work...ECU is also expecting electromagnetic valve for VVT connected. But there are other things - f.e. signal measured by camshaft on 1.4 - as you probably know, ending of camshaft on 1.4 looks like cross (butterfly), and on 1.2 it measures teeths on camshaft pulley - completely different signals. I think ECU for 1.4 cannot work with different signal like on 1.2 ... maybe yes, maybe no. Regarding HW: mountings and so on, everything should match OK (silentblocks, exhaust manifold, gearbox, water pipes...), maybe some small modifications are needed... But ECU...maybe you should buy 1.2 ECU

So one is VVT and one is fixed... that is why i asked about engine types.
Heads might be interchangeable... Most 1.4/1.2 fire engines are have very similar blocks.

That would mean a close inspection of the VVT head before it goes on the 1.2 engine...maybe a head rebuild.

Get eLearn and pin out the ECU connector for the 1.2 and the 1.4 VVT... if they match then replacing the ECU would be a good option... if the pins don't match .. then you'd also need a loom...and it gets more complicated...(if you get a used loom & ecu and car doesn't start ... it will be a pain to troubleshoot)

If it was me:
-i'd do work on the mechanical side; change the head over.
-If the ECU pins match then i'd think replacing the ECU and maybe 1-2 connectors would be easier.

Thanks, I went ahead and bought a 1.4 engine in the end. All in and running now. Changed the clutch whilst it was out. Aswell as a service , belts oils etc.

I took it out earlier for a test drive and couldn't get 1st or second gear at all. Stick far to the left is engaging 3rd, and where 3rd should be is fifth.... put it all way over to right , where 5th should be and nothing..
Previous owner said nothing of this issue, I've not changed the gearbox, its stamped up as an 09 manufacture, so guessing original, not changed the gear selector cables, all put back to correct places ...
So why no 1st or 2nd?

Sat here thinking what could be the issue, remembered only thing I done different was when re installing the gear selector cables I pressed down the pictures spring lever..
It seems that pressing this down limits the travel of the reach of the cable for left to right motion..
All sorted now.

This button's purpose is to adjust the length of the selection cable. It has to be used in combination with the locking system located at the selector level.
The procedure is described in eLearn...
