Hi Everyone,

I've got the 1.2L 8V, and I keep getting an emulsion mix in the breather tube, and oil getting into the throttle body.

The tube is the new style, and there's no split in it.

Head gasket is ok, part of it is going to be that it's mainly used for short journeys.

Any other suggestions on what could be causing it?

Thanks,

Thomas

Worn engine, defective piston ring ? Too much oil vapour and air humidity would produce the "mayonnaise" you can see in the breathing pipe.
You could install a buffer canister on the line, where oil and gas would separate before re-entering the inlet manifold...

Hi Bernie she's only got 60k on the clock so id hope she isn't worn.

I think a catch can might be the way to go, keep getting high HC advisories on mot.

Curious about the root cause though.

What was the vehicles history?

My old camper had this... I made a VERY crude breather bottle.

Clear plastic BOLD wash liquid container.

Oily air piped in one side... less oily air fed to the motor via other sides pipe.

Did the trick.. but collected little oil.:)

Maybe the 'breather citcuit' on you motor is blocked..

Had that on a car that would dirty oil in 100 miles.
Think it did 60k on the factory fill of oil :(

All possible.. but will take time and effort.. if not money..!!! :)

Idea: fit a new thermostat.. thatll guarantee proper engine temp.

And will take an hour..and cost £20 ;)

I've had it since it was a year old with 10k on clock.

Now 13 years old with 68k on clock.

I've changed oil myself every year with 5w40 full synth. Used Petronas for years, but I've switched to Castrol edge fast now. It's also got the fiat accreditation.

Spark plugs are clean at every service.

It's due a timing belt in a few weeks so I'm wondering if valve shims might be worth checking.

Injector cleaning/testing is another option but it's running fine.

Stat is 4 years old, replaced it after the plastic pipe on it cracked. Coolant is fine.

How is the pressure at the filling cap (removed) when engine iddles ? You should feel it very little, no real puf-puf nor heavy smoke. Do you mean high HydroCarbon residues ? If so, might be due to to the oil vapour recirculation, a collecting canister (or soap bottle ;-) might help, you wouldn't collect much oil in it but as little as it would that oil wouldn't be burnt in the engine or mix with ambient moisture and migrate to mayonnaise...

Back to first post - so problem is with oil gong into throttle body right? Here I see few basic things:

1, cheap check - does 1.2 8V have small spiral sifter inserted in head cover's oil vapors output? I saw videos on YouTube about 1.2 8V engines where this sifter was...Is it there? Must be there? F.e. on my 1.4 8V there's no sifter
2, cheap check - oil level - you checked it I believe
3, cheap check - high oil pressure : engine can detect only low oil pressure, but not high pressure. It can be also caused by using incorrect oil filter
4, expensive check - in case if some oil distribution canal is blocked by dirt, or oil level is too high, directly in oil pump is mechanical regulator with spring which should open when oil pressure is too high. Maybe this regulator (or it's spring) is stucked and it doesn't send oil back directly to the oil pan.
5, expensive check - maybe there is blocked some oil canal which should return oil from head back to the oil pan

1, the sifter is (was) a poor attempt to force oil condensation before getting into the breather pipe and the inlet manifold; modern engines are using sophisticated cyclonic and/or multi-chamber which have more separation capacity.

2, should not affect the vapour volume, unless REALLY overfilled.

3, filter housing has a by-pass that opens if filter get clogged.

4, how could higher oil pressure increase vapour volume ? It's a closed circuit.

5, oil return is achieved by gravity thru several pretty large canals between head and sump. Obstruct them and oil will fill the head and eventually flow to the inlet manifold with engine shut-off (and lot of blue smoke just before)

Engine block internal pressure and thus oil-vapour generation is only due to leakage between piston rings and cylinders, and maybe for a tiny amount to leakage at valve seals (o-rings) level. Have that vapour going thru a separator, from shelf or home-made, before entering the manifold and you'll get rid of the emulsion you complain about ...
