Technical Earth Fault?

I'm getting the check power steering error message.

If I remove the smaller of the 2 earth cables from the battery terminals the message clears.

Am I correct in assuming I have an earth problem in the cabin?

Hi Bernie,

Yeah the thinner of the 2 wires on the negative terminal.

If I undo the 10mm nut and take the lead off the error clears with the ignition on.

Reattach to the post and it comes back.

I've wire brushed the battery post, the earth on the chassis rail, rocker cover, and tranny.

I took the terminal apart to clean it up and that's when I realised the issue was with the smaller lead.

I have no idea but before getting into this, are you sure you’re not just disconnecting the power to the power steering and hence the error clearing ?

Had a quick look on mine, this cable goes into the harness so one can't tell where it connects on the other end. According to eLearn, the power steering has its own earth point (C014), with a black 10mm² section cable, which matches the cable you've disconnected.
So I guess Andy is right (as usual ;-)

If you manage to find C014, check for a voltage drop from it to battery ground with engine running also which would indicate cable. (May be teaching granny to suck eggs here[emoji3])

Looking at this. The connector on the bottom of the power steering unit is connected directly to the battery the negative directly to CO14 which is the 10mm wire on the negative terminal.

At least I know what I'm testing now.

I'll update tomorrow if it dries up enough to get out.
