Hello everyone I am new forum, I am deaf forgive me for my grammar is sucks. I have own Grande Punto 1.3 75bhp since it was out of factory in 2007, the engine is bulletproof but interior is not so great few pieces fall, the body it went rust quickly at the last mileage it was 189,765miles before I sold it.

Now I am not sure if I should buy other Grande 90bhp version? because it have 6 speed gears over my old 75bhp which only have 5 because the rev it went mad high 2,800rpm at 70mph! I am wonder what the rev it will be at 70mph on 6 gear version? my best average mpg ever record was 58.7 would the 90bhp do better or worst on mpg?

is there other Fiat like Bravo 1.6 eco or any car you may think is better than Grande Punto? my budget is £4000 with low tax under £120 and do over 60mpg, it have to be great on motorway long distance cruise.

thanks(y)

You'll definitely have lower revs on the highway with the 90bhp version according to this table.

If I am going for a fiat again I will probably pick a grande punto with the 1.9 JTD since it has more room for power and no timing chain. Rumor is the M32 gearbox is weak though.

Thanks for the diagram is very helpful, but I have never change my timing chain ever! for 188,000 miles no noise. Oh no! the M32 was on my friend Vauxhall bearing failure whine at low mileage it was horrific for him to fixed it. I am expect the M32 is include on 1.9 120 and 130 is too risk for me to buy this M32 gearbox because I do 32,000 miles a year I reckon it will be failure one day for sure.

I have look on Google it calculator ratio approxment with car weight and tyre size at the 6th gear is about 1,900rpm at 70 mph it sound about right?

For a £4000 budget you can get a Punto Evo 1.6 multijet sporting with 120bhp, and £30 a year car tax. Far better option that the 1.3 or 1.9, and will get much better MPG from the euro 5 engine

Diesel engines seem to be considered the black duck nowadays, but they still have advantages vs the petrol ones ...

- MPG: no doubt here, diesel's efficiency is far better than petrol's
- Maintenance costs: no sparkplugs to care about, nor failing coil-packs
- Higher torque: doesn't require so many gear shifting
- Noise: lower revs means lower noise, even though the engine counts only for part of driving noise

Cons: engine itself might be noisier from outside, some may claim they have more sensible parts: glowplugs, high pressure pump, injectors, fuel filter ... My 1.3 Mjet 90 has now about 120 000 km and NEVER had ANY of those replaced (but the filter O-C)

Since you drive 32 000 miles per year (I guess mainly on highways) it would be a total non-sense to go for a petrol car, the 1.3 Mjet 90hp with the 6 gears GB would be my choice ...

BRs, Bernie

1.6 has a timing belt correct?

How good is the 1.6 multijet reliable?

My 1.6 Punto Evo is on 173k miles and still going strong.

Also worth noting it’s the engine that fiat and GM use in many different vans so it’s proven itself over many millions of miles.

I really don’t understand what the issue is with the timing chain? But yes the 1.6 has a belt.

People thinks the chain timing is better than belt, because of only change twice maybe three in the car lifetime than the belt. In my opinion I prefer the chain.

Ok so not based on anything just personal preference, because to be honest the chain in the 1.3 is pretty robust, mine had done 120k when I sold the car which is still on the road now and the chain was never changed when I owned it.

The other good thing about the 1.3 is sacrificial rockers which cost very little to replace and will break avoiding any valve damage even if the chain did fail. Non of the fiats with belts have this. The belts have to be changed far more often and if they do fail say good bye to your valves.

Agree with Bernie. I have 2006 1.3 90bhp. Absolutely solid still after 130k no rust.
Bought for my daughter 10 years ago. She gave it back to me last year. Got it out of limp mode, gave it a full service and brakes and suspension refurb and hasn’t missed a beat since. Love itIMG_1268.JPG
