Whilst..hmm..'fixing' my friends car yesterday she told me that the cars using oil..approx 1.5 litres over the last 7 months.
Mainly used to commute around 5 miles a day with the odd decent run out.
No oil leaks.
No mayo in the oil cap.
No untoward blue smoke or anything.
Is this normal for a 1.4 gp?..83 k on the clock and running like a dream..mostly..

Mine uses quite a bit too, always has. 1.5l seems a bit excessive though.
Mine gets through approx .5l in 6000 miles, that's about as many miles as it does per year.
My T-Jet however uses almost none between changes.

Cheers

1% of fuel consumption is considered as the upper limit, so do the maths and you'll know if it burns too much oil or not ...

Thanks Bernie..no idea ..only thing I got caned for at school was maths..not my strong point.
I'll check out the miles since it was bought till today.

Well, each time you fill the tank (40l), refilling oil with 0.4l would still be in specs ... but the cars nowadays are consuming way less oil than that !
So let's say 4 fills over the past 7 months (and it's probably more) equals 1.6l of oil, which is almost what She gets ...

Short trips with cold engine will cause higher oil consumption (parts (rings) won't get to come up to temp and expand)

I would still check the PCV valve.

All looks acceptable, just make sure she uses good oil, keeps an eye on the dip stick, and does regular maintenance.

Thanks...I know the pipe you referenced isnt secured with any clips..would that make any difference?..I'll check it when the cars next here..
Is there a PCV valve too?
