hello all im new to this forum and in need of some assistance i just picked up my lovely wee grande punto on friday last but the driver side window does not seem to work however sometimes when i pull up the switch (as if to close the window i hear a click) and other times nothing and with the passenger window on the drivers master switch it will only go down not up i have already tried disconnecting and reconnecting the switch from the door i have even taken it apart and cleaned it there wasent anything obvious i have also disconnected the door multi plug and reconnected it thinking it might have just been a loose wire or something but nothing im completly stumped i also cannot ajust the passenger side wing mirror but i can the driver is this the same issue or seperate. im not sure if it is the switch the door harnes or something wrong with the fuses i cant get into the fusebox to check as i cant get the glovebox out

thanks guys for your time and any help you can give

edit upon further inspection the driver side window switchbank does not light up i have checked the fuses they are fine however the window adjustment switch lights up so i assume either the switch isnt getting power or there is something wrong with the switch itself if somone could give me a shove in the right direction it would be greatly apreciated also my car is the 09 5 door 1.4 it only has the engine and glovebox fusebox

Hi

This is a very common issue with old GPs.
Check the door wiring harness coupling as Charlie mentioned.
Disconnect the plug from the door jam and remove the rubber grommet and inspect the weirs.
Mine was broken too and fixed last week.

Regards
Bob

Weirs : wires ;)

It is the plug onto the door that concerned me..

12 YEAR OLD plastic.. :(

How was it Bob?

thank you guys soo much for your help ile go check the wiring now at the door i also have the task of repairing the rear window manual wind regulator lol and juust a quick quuestion the left hand side motorised adjustable wing mirror is that a seperate issue

ok so a lot of the wires in that point have snapped/are rubbing and i dont have the skill or confidence to fix them do you know where i can get a replacement harness or if there is anybody in the glasgow area that would be able to give me a decent price to fix

You just need wire. and soldering kit.

Cut at break.
Slide heat shrink sleeve over it.
2x blobs of soldèr..new wire into old loom.
Slide sleeve over new bit .Shrink.

same again until you are done.:)

Cost.. less than a tenner.

There are Kits for hatch wiring.. but sounds like your punto is just limping along... as is my mj. :)

Mirror.. could well be controlled by a broken wire.. ;)

How was the plug?

I have not done mine.. be good to hear your tips. Charlie

plug was fine untill i tried to reconnect it then the bit that is in the body that the door plugs into keeps trying to fall back inside the body and i cant get any grip on it to reconnect my door :( but aye my poor we motor is an injured wee soul but i shal make her well again i already tried to fix the regulator for the rear manual crank window and bodged it so i have to replace the entire regulator lol but ile get there eventuallyh

I'm in the Glasgow area, it's more than likely what they said above. A little bit of soldering and wire clipping and it should be good as new. You can optionally take the door wiring from a wreckers yard?

The rear window regulator is also a common problem, due to its shape water is allowed to run in the tube that carries the steel cable and here it sits rusting the cable, new assembly is very cheap on e bay and very easy to fit ,however before fitting fill the cable tube with oil to prevent it happening again.

:D

Actually the socket was okay but the lever broke when i tried to disconnect it.
luckily it was the top handle kind of part not the locking mechanism.

make sure not to put force when disconnecting the sockets.
The plastics are so brittle specially if they exposed to hot sun.

Those thermoplastic shells tend to age quite bad and usually, they're not very well treatened when one tries to open them (where's the lock, which direction to pull, does it need twisting etc.).
As a result they often break, at least partly, thus losing their dust/spills/moisture shielding, which in turn will lead soon to electrical issues.
In order to maximize the chance to leave them intact, I recommend to inspect the connector carefully to learn the lock mechanism (usually lift the arm and pull the connector in the same time).
A hot air gun or hair dryer might also help "softening" a bit the plastic crap ...

ok so new update i have managed to fix the rear window regulator (replaced regulator with oem part) but now im trying to find a wiring loom but every one i try to find has the wrong plug for the switch its a big white plug when mine is a small black one im not too confident in soldering as a friend of mine has highly discouraged me and even an auto electrician said the loom was too far gone to warrent repair so now im on the hunt for a drivers door loom i also figured out that the reason my car was chewing through fuel was the tyres where at half the pressure they where supposed to be (i should have checked them when i bought the car i know im a massive tool)

but i just wanna say a massive thanks to everyone who commented and posted helping hints and comments it means a lot if any of you guys are near the glasgow area we should setup a wee meet or something but thanks again guy much apreciated

Door harness is available as spare part near Fiat dealers, maybe worth a phone call to get a cote and verify the connector is provided or need to be ordered separately ...

Cheers, Bernie

ps: what's your VIN ?

Some pics from my 2007 mj

Wiring was fractured..

Prize up the lever mechanism while wriggling the plug..

The wiring is visible once you slide back the rubber boot

This is a good point, well worth remembering when working on any part of a car. Plastic parts are significantly more likely to break in cold weather. Everyone has a hairdryer.
