Oh yes. A wobbly disc will knock the pads back causing the piston/pistons to retract into the caliper. You don't need to knock them back very far for the brake pedal to achieve a long travel.

Please do keep us up to date with how it all pans out.

good luck
Jock

Re: Front wheel bearing replacement

Well, there is no long travel, and we just did 600 km with this with no feelable ill effects other than the said noise. I only looked at the wheel / brake through the rim after I finally concluded the noise is from the back.

But I see the point, I plan to look at it tomorrow either way.

Re: Front wheel bearing replacement

The rear right bearing is defo gone, it makes horrible noise by hand turning. I made sure to compare to the other side. I did not feel any play though, but it has to be some judging from the state of the brake disc (does not look so bad on the other side). The part is on its way. I prepped everything, sprayed the bolts, made sure the cap moves, all that, tools needed set aside, should be 30 minutes job when it arrives.

The question then: should the balls be naked like this (I know somebody will quote me on this out of context ), see the picture? Or did something disintegrate there? What are the chances that the hub will disintegrate on removal? Am I in big trouble then?

Can't miss that one ! This is where the ritchness of French language would help: depening on the size (mainly) we'd use different words:

- une bille, for a glass-ball like young boys play at school, also for a ball-bearing (roulement billes)
- une boule, for a flipper or pin-ball
- une balle de tennis ou de ping-pong, self explaining
- un ballon de football ou de rugby, self explaining

etc. when they'd all be 'balls' crossed the channel, naked or not ... ;-)

Cheers, Bernie

Re: Front wheel bearing replacement

To close the story - it is silent again! Very easy job this turned out to be, no surprises. So nice, I am actually considering doing the other side preemptively, just that I ordered only one bearing. What also surprised me is the performance of my electric impact wrench. It's one of those not too expensive ones, rated at 400Nm and mostly meant for wheel bolts. On one occasion it could not even deal with that (they were tightened at a garage) and in general I had little faith in it, so equipped myself with a breaker bar and additional lever pipe. There was no need Oh, and yes, the balls are supposed to be sticking out like this
