I am considering replacing one of these on a 2006 Grande Punto. I have seen a video on an earlier Punto model where it appears to be necessary to remove the stereo speaker in order to reach up and remove the check strap from within the door. Can someone please advise whether this needs to be done on the Grande Punto or is it possible just to undo the screws/nuts and remove it directly? If I need to remove the speaker, etc, I will probably try to live with the existing one and noise. Btw, will this eventually die anyway? (just the noise at the moment). Also, could I replace it with one from the back door? (i.e are they all the same?) Many thanks.

Probably due to my non-native English knowledge but I Don't get what you mean by check strap, and google translate doesn't help either as it return the exact understanding I had …

You are not alone - I did not know what this thing was called until looking at this forum. When you open the doors they do not just swing open like a tent flapping in the wind but open in stages and have three stopping points. This appears to be the result of this metal thing that looks a bit like a few links on a bike chain and connects between the door and the door sill. After a while these check straps can begin to make a loud noise when opening and closing the door. The solution seems to be to replace them and my main query is whether the speakers need to be removed to do this. Having removed the rear speakers in the past and ending up destroying one of the window mechanisms I am reluctant to go back in there!

I like the reference to the leather/fabric old stuff, shouldn't that be called control latch as it kinda latch the door in a controlled manner ?
BTW I usually spray some white grease on them to prevent noise...

And from this drawing it seems you Don't need to disassemble the door panels/speaker ...

I must become blind; just had a look at my GP, You'll have to remove the door panel to access the 'female' part of the door check …
