Had this light come on yesterday and from looking online the only other image I can find of it mentions brake wear warning, is that correct?

It doesn't light up straight away, seems to appear after a few minutes of driving.

The pads have only done 5k miles, passed MOT last month with no mention of the brakes. So am a little confused as to why it would be that. Any input would be appreciated.

Yes, that is the front pad wear indicator light.

On the passenger side (UK) only, there is a wire to a metal contact embedded near the base of one of the brake pads. When it wears down this completes a circuit to earth through the disc during braking and illuminates the warning. When the brakes are released - and the pad has moved off the disc - the light should go out again.

What sometimes happens is the wire gets damaged or broken. If the damaged/broken part makes contact with any bare metal (earth) it will cause the light to come on regardless of pad condition. Example here.

This thread has a picture of the wire - in this case completely broken (the other wire visible in the picture is for the ABS sensor).

Check wire and pads on passenger side.
