When changing my spark plugs I noticed there was some oil around two of the ignition coils. There was a little bit of oil in the holes where the ignition coils go, and one coil smelt of oil too. However, the majority of the oil is on the outside of the engine. On the top, and down the front and right hand side too.

Any ideas where it could be coming from? My first thought it was coming up and out of the coils, but there's not very much in the hole.

This is the first time I've had the engine cover off, so no idea how long its been there. Last service was a year ago, and if it had been present then, I would have expected it to have been mentioned, so might be a more recent development. I had to top up the oil, and might have overfilled it - could that be the cause? And if so, where would it leak out from if overfilled? Oil cap was on super tight.

This is a 1.4L 16v engine (199 A6.000)
