Anyone done the GP 1.9 DMF to SMF conversion?
I am considering it but have read some reports about the quality of some conversion kits on ebay...
 
Grande puntos are getting old and dual mass fly wheels are getting cheap, unless you are running huge power increases, and assuming you have to change the flywheel as the current one has died, it’s far more cost effective to just put another DMF back in with a new clutch and release bearing.

The DMF takes a lot of the stresses away from the gearbox so without it you can end up with a premature gearbox failure.

If you keep the car another 5 years and do 70k miles you are unlikely to need another DMF if it does fail again it will be the problem of he next owner, or maybe even the scrapyard as the car will be a minimum of 15 years old and by then old (euro4) diesels will be banned from everywhere

I have also got an Alfa 156 JTDM 150 with the same engine, remapped to 190BHP, and the first DMF/clutch went at about 140,000 ( 50K of that with the remap ) I don't thrash my engines, and am mechanically sympathetic, I do a lot of commuter miles on Aroads/motorways, so spend a lot of time in 6th.

I am inclined to just replace my Punto DMF with another DMF, but I am curious as to what it would be like with a'normal' ie traditional clutch/flywheel.

I am considering a remap on the Fiat as well, so the DMF would be wise I think !
 
In a four cylinder engine, every half turn gets a combustion stroke from one or another cylinder, this happens just after a complete stand-still of the pistons (linear Wise) when they reach their T/BDC.
That causes huge constrain to the crankshaft thus heavy vibrations that are transmitted to the rest of the powertrain: gearbox/transfert box/differential/wheels and at the end partially to the steering wheel and the carbon interface that drives the car.
The DMF helps to filter those vibrations by inserting angular dampers (springs) between the crankshaft and the clutch plate.
Remove the damping by installing a SMF and all the vibrations will be back in the gearbox, with all the potential dammage they can do ...
