Hi,hope some one can help. Grande Punto 1.2, looks like a new starter fitted before I got it.no problems starting. Now six months later, the teeth have worn on the solid fly wheel. The fly wheel is 25cm dia ,with 116 teeth. The starter has 9 teeth.Does any one know if this is correct or possibly check their vehicle,if they got one in bits.Suspect the starter has the wrong amount of teeth. Cheers in advance. Pete.

Found a 1.4 8v and it's not got a solid flywheel, but bolts into the flywheel its self.It also has 116 teeth but the starter has 10 teeth. So no better off really!!

Do you mean you've a Dual Mass Flywheel on the 1.4 Pete ?

Anyway, 10 vs 9 teeth is a HUGE difference and may very well explain the FW destruction, even if the pitch is identical, the pinion would not fully engage it's teeth in the FW (more to the edge) and would eventually ruin it !

There are four different references for the petrol engine starter motor in ePer, I would guess ther hardest motor to start (1.4 16V ??) got less teeth @ pinion and a few more on the flywheel to ease the cranking. SOrry I Don't have one at hand to check …

Yes,dual mass on the 1.4. It's the 1.2 8v I have issues with, looking at the nearly starter reference numbers are 803274,(87&174) printed on the do not remove sticker. Looking at Ebay most 1.2 8v starters are 55193355,and they have 10 teeth,so looks like I will have to try a 55193355,and hope it lasts longer with the new flywheel.

Out of curiosity, how do you know that the damage to the fly wheel wasn’t there before you bought the car, I don’t know of anyone who would check the wear of the teeth on the flywheel as a matter of routine and if everything is working ok then why the need to check on the flywheel now ?

When I bought the car, there was the tell tail grind, occasionally.marked the front pulley, and checked when it did grind,it always appeared at the same area, pushed car forwards in gear and it would start no probs. But got worse very quickly.Fitted another fly wheel, which cured the fault 100'/. For a while. Then fault returned. My guess that flywheel had gone, but only starter fitted, did not cure fault so sold the car. So now fitting flywheel and starter.

Hi Pete,

as you can see there are only two references for the CC1.2 , since eBay's items says 10 teeth, I guess the wrong one has been fitted on your car :-(

Would be interesting to get an old clutch bell, break it just to keep the starter fixing part so you can see 'from inside' how pinion and flywheel do align … (do not feed + to starter so it will only engage)

I'm glad I'd been reading this thread as I almost made the exact same mistake on my 1.4 Mk2b. It's been sat for a while and the starter wouldn't engage. I ordered a replacement off ebay which came from a 1.4 Idea, you'd think same engine and same platform would equal same starter. Thankfully I checked and the one which came off had 10 teeth, the one from the Idea had 9. Also thankfully, dropping the original starter on the floor when I removed it unstuck the solenoid and got it working again, but it could've been a crisis if I'd just fitted the replacement without thinking about it!

I Believe many people have had this bad experience …
