Hi all, newby here and need some help! Myself and diesel mechanic are now baffled with what else to try to help with the starting problems from cold, (or after approx 2 hours.)
2008 1.9 multijet sporting, key in ignition, lights all come on as normal, wait for them to go off, try starting it, turns over but will not fire up without a huge fight! takes about half an hour most days, has now had brand new set of glow plugs as thats what is displaying on the dash, (and still is after new ones) still didnt work, new relay/timer fitted, new EGR valve, fuel filter, pressure test, leak tests, battery test, and whatever else mechanic may have tried.
Its now worse than before! Grrrrrrrr..... so frustrating, and seem like im throwing money away trying all sorts of things that are not working. Pleeeeaase help!

Has your mechanic at least checked that power arrives at the glowplugs when it's due to ?? To rule out the preheat circuit, you can use an heat gun in the air inlet, if engine start ok (or at least better), the preheater doesn't work correctly, if it doesn't help start the engine, then the fault comes from somewhere else, from low fuel pressure (filter, primary pump) to worn engine (low compression level) … All stuf that can be checked by a serious mechanic !

Injector correction might help indicate if they are worn out, leaking down partly flooding the engine and then maybe not providing enough pressure for the engine to start.

The rail pressure regulator and fuel pressure pump will cause similar issues.

These should only be considered after the others, fuel pressure and preheating.

Air getting in the fuel filter can also cause a hard to diagnose cold start...check for bad connections, fuel weeping out.

Does it start ok and keep going after you spray a bit of start fluid in the intake?
Is the throttle plate (butterfly valve - not the correct name for it on a diesel but can't remember the name) opening?

Thank you very much for all your help guys, I'm going to mention these things to the mechanic and see what he thinks.
