Anything in particular I should look out for? Never had a TJet so any suggestions would be appreciated. It "seems" fairly well kept and maintained, currently at under 50k miles.

All of the common faults, check them all as my tjet had pretty much all of them without me realising (and being too excited to purchase it)

A sense of community wouldn’t hurt either.

The guides are worth a look as pretty much all of the regular GP issues apply to a T-Jet too. Mine has given me less grief than the 1.4 8v I also have, that ate a gearbox at 65,000.

Rear lights corrode and cause strange things to happen (usually split rear washer hose), heater resistor if non Aircon, top mounts will probably need doing, broken springs, bad thermostats, leaking radiator, goosed turbo and cracked exhaust manifold, clogged or worn out oil separator, lower rear engine mount, sticky rear calipers, drop links, leaking oil cooler, leaking rear shocks.

That about covers the issues I've sorted with my two cars.

T-Jet has never broken down or failed to start and GPs are fairly easy to work on. Some T-Jet specific parts, mainly suspension are dealer only and extortionaly expensive, buy Bilstein and Eibach as replacement. If you need an exhaust, go custom as they are pricey too. Manifold cracks are quite common, manifests as boost fluctuations and generally crack underneath so hard to see on car. Fit latest spec modified manifold from non MA MiTo or Abarth 500 with IHI turbo if replacing. Turbine housing also cracks, small cracks are OK, large ones not good. Mine was almost in bits when I changed it, available from Italy for £80 ish. B&M may also need updating too.

Check it has had the timing belt done, if no evidence do it asap. Make sure the garage doing it has the correct locking tools and ask to see them before handing over keys. Expect about £200 in labour.

We have two T-jets in our family- both have been very reliable and are great cars if they have been cared for and not neglected.
Definately do the cam belt right away if it has not been changed. Failure is catastrophic.Fit the scuttle drain modification tube (£12) otherwise it drips on to the alternator. Seal up the area where the scuttle leaks onto the servo- it rusts badly. See the useful guide on the forum.
Complete exhaust £160 fitted - it is unique to the Turbo model.
Brake discs are prone to quick wear but pads and discs are cheap on e bay and easy to fit. Shocks another weak point. We recently had a split fuel tank breather hose (Fiat wanted a new tank at £700) but again E bay £30 for a pipe.
Electric windows prone to breaking- don't try to replace wires get a whole second hand regulator off E bay again £30
 
Thanks for the advice guys, it's helpful! Particularly learning that a lot of parts have to come from Fiat so that sounds expensive,but good knowing MiTo or 500 parts fit the tJet.

So if suspension is an issue, consider aftermarket?

Be aware of belt. Engine still suffers issue of the water drain drilling alternater. Heating is typical issue.

The car has been in the family since new. The woman I'm buying it from's brother had it from new, then the woman, now her daughter, who's selling it to go traveling lol. Has the books so will check it. Just had discs and calipers all round.

I'm planning to keep this for likely under a year, I'll need to upgrade to a bigger car, but getting one last little blast of what I want before settling for a traditional dad wagon or something lol.
 
Most MiTo parts fit, 500 engine bits from TJet engine with ihi turbo will fit. Search for TJet springs, there has been lots of discussion.

They're cheap enough to keep on the road with some TLC. Keep it alongside the kid bus as a project / fun car. Heater issue is cheap and quick, scuttle drain also fairly easy and quick.
