Lightbulb I want to install a turbo on my Starjet

Hello everyone, for a year I have a Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 16v starjet and now I would like to install a turbo. I want to know if any of you have done this before or if you know what parts are needed to install the turbo. I have a general idea but where I have more doubts is the electronic part.
I know this modification is “common ” in the Fiat Panda 100hp that use the same engine as my car.

I do not want to swap or buy a tjet, I want to put a turbo to my starjet and learn in the process.
The turbo I have for this is a vl38 of a 500 Abarth.

Sorry for my bad english and I hope you could help me, thanks!

Re: I want to install a turbo on my Starjet

I'm sure the block and head is different, coolant channels are different and compression is lower on the T-Jet, I'm sure the cams will be different too. The ECU is the same so in theory, that may be able to be utilised although there will be significant bits of wiring for sensors absent on the starjet.

You'd be easier doing an engine swap, rebuild the engine first if you want to learn something or get a greater sense of satisfaction!

Cheers

Ben

Re: I want to install a turbo on my Starjet

The block has the same characteristics, many people say it is the same but without turbo. As for the compression the Tjet has 9.5:1 and the Starjet 10.5:1 more or less.I think make swap would be more complicated to have to change all the wiring not?

T-Jet block and head is different with respect to cooling channels, crank is forged, pistons are different. There are other sensors that would require connecting for the turbo to operate properly that you may not have wiring for on the starjet loom.
It'd be an interesting project but I suspect you would be doing this for power and if this is the case, you'd probably want the forged crank and uprated cooling offered by T-Jet bottom end and head.

It's extremely unreliable to turbocharge this engine.
Also you cannot just install a vl38 and remap the ecu. Even if the engine could handle the boost... nothing else is made for that power (gearbox, axles etc)

Btw I think you still can't modify the ecu from starjets...
So imagine that you need sooo many parts already plus a new ecu.

It's cheaper to buy a new gp tjet with a lot of miles and just rebuild it.

Re: I want to install a turbo on my Starjet

Just go ahead and do it..
The basics:
-ecu... check if your's can be tuned... if it can support boost.. if not Aftermarket or t-jet and rewire=Expect loosing Body computer functions ( lights, signals, central locking .. ..maybe even ABS ESP..etc)
-boost MAP sensor
-turbo exhaust manifold (the t-jet might fit... check)
-oil supply
-oil drain
-water cooling
-cooler thermostat + housing (t-jet might fit)
-intercooler
-pipes + hoses
.....

Just buy a crashed T-jet GP or Bravo... use all the parts off it

Hi Bernie, nice to see you here. This is also what I focus on. I also wanna swap the 1.4Starjet with 1.4Tjet, or install an extra turbo on GP. Have u made any progress?

Hi Ben, sorry to bother u, but I guess u mean that installing a 1.4Tjet on GP is possible and easier to achieve than merely installing an extra turbo?

Re: I want to install a turbo on my Starjet

Yes, it will be easier and much much more reliable....with more power.

Both will be expensive, but the t-jet will only cost as much as the cheapest t-jet GP donor car.. 1000-1500euro....
For the other one you can expect to pay as much only for the turbo and aftermarket ECU...add to that exhaust manifold, wiring, etc etc

Hi lad, I also want to upgrade a GP 1.4Starjet by installing a new 1.4Tjet. There is no GP 1.4Tjet in China, hence modification the only way. Could u plz tell me what should I prepare besides the parts u mentioned if I determine to do this? And how much it may cost? Another thing I really concern is the gear box. I wonder if the original 6MT can bear the torque of 230Nm. Thank you!!!

.....

Keep in mind you won't have the forged crank, or the stronger pistons and connecting rods.... so i suggest searching for a second hand vl37 turbo from 120hp t-jet (it would be more than enough for the engine, will easily reach 140 hp with the right tune in a t-jet... but the starjet has higher compression, different cams.. etc won't be as simple as just replace the bits and go; it could make higher power... or just blow up)

You can get an idea if the exhaust manifold from a t-jet can fit, if the exhaust gasket looks about the same (check eper for your exhaust gasket part number...find a few pictures of it online... compare visually to the t-jet one).

Either way... this is months of work and waiting for parts. i wouldn't do it unless i'd have another car, to use in the meantime, and my own garage...and could do the work myself.... otherwise it's going to be ridiculously expensive.

it would still be cheaper to ship over the front half of a t-jet car.
