is the 1.4 16v 2010 59 plate a safe engine? went to start the car this morning after a very heavy frost -8 overnight and the car made noises similar to the charging belt slipping so i stopped the engine, tried again and still the same, left it all day and tried to start it now engine is turning but won't fire it doesn't sound the same as it would normally before firing, could it be a snapped cam belt, don't think engine was froze as the expansion bottle was ok,
any advice would be appreciated and also an indication of cost in the worse case scenario

NO.
Modern engines are interference engines.

When you crank... does it spin the engine really really fast?...sounds more like a blender that a engine?

got the rac out, luckily the patrol used to work for fiat, turn out the info i was given when i bought the car was wrong it isn't a 1.4 16v its 8v so looks like a 1.2 and he said it was a safe engine, turns out that the noise was the charger belt slipping due to the frost and had flooded the engine with me trying to start it, problem is now solved

Again.... NO the 8v isn't safe either.
Valves will bend.
I don't know of a modern engine that is actually safe.

wouldn't it be easier to just replace the belt, water pump and pensioner for a few hundred euro ?

Also add some coolant to the expansion tank if you're not sure when it was replaced. (remove some/all of the coolant in the expansion tank and add some concentrate in it's place)

There's a scuttle drain that leaks water onto rhw alternator. I'll see if i can find a link to the right post in the morning. Cheap to change

Some of those engine are "half-safe" : the valves should not bend, but the rocker have a weak (by design) area where they should break ...

Sorry for the delay - here's the link to the Scuttle Drain thread (Admins perhaps this should be moved to a Guide): https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto/337783-modified-scuttle-drain.html

Without this water drains down onto the Alternator, rusting bearings and at worst on really cold days freezing the alternator with unhappy consequences from that!
