General My New Grande Punto T-jet -- Mod ideas?

I am new to this forum.... I have also just bought a GP 1.9 Mjet Sporting 130 ( 2006) with 78,000 miles on it.
I bought it as a second car to commute 350 miles a week on motorways etc. My main car is an Alfa 156 1.9 JTDM 150 remapped to about 190.
One of the main reasons for buying the car was the engine, as its basically the same as my Alfa, although 8v as opposed to 16v, and I know they are very good power units.
I am considering maybe remapping the Fiat at a later date, but the 6 speed box is a weak spot on these cars due to the power/design flaws with the gearbox bearings etc.
In fact it is quite noisy in all gears so it will need attention at some point !

Being new to Fiats ( this is my first !) I have been very impressed with the way it drives, the 6 speed box is so good to use ( its a better change than my Alfa ). I have already done over 1200 miles in it in less than a month !

Apologies for going OT on this thread by the way !

Re the OP wanting to mod his car: I would do the same if I were him, but I would be wary of a remap due to the above issues re the 6 speed box: I have spoken to a Fiat specialist and the OEM bearings in the box are too small and wear out. I also asked about maybe getting a higher 6th gear put in when I get the box refurbished, but apparently that is not possible. I would like the higher final gear to give me more mpg on the motorway...:)
Ah nice, do enjoy the mods!

I've read the same about the box (yours I believe is the M32 - aka CHOCOLATE!) however those found in the Tjet models are a 5 speed, a far more reliable and stronger platform, but still not the best. I don't seem to have any issues with mine, but I'm driving it pretty nice and avoiding heavy acceleration in 1st etc. If it needs a rebuild I'll be doing the clutch slave cylinder, stronger parts and a more durable clutch. Costly... Let's hope it won't be needed!

Here is a pic of mine ( if the upload works !!)

2006 GP Mjet 1.9. The alloys have been 'refurbished..' which in fact means that they have been badly resprayed and all the black paint is coming off !

As the car is not my main one I can put up with this.

I have had the oil/filter done, gearbox oil dropped to see what was in there ( it confirmed my suspicions that all was not well... as there was evidence of a previous additive and swarf )

I changed the air filter and I have never seen such a black sooty element as the one that came out !) No wonder I was only getting 36 mpg on motorway/A road commutes !

I have had all the error codes sorted, although there are a few 'quirks' still: the power steering sometimes does not engage upon startup, and also the battery charge light stays on ( these 2 seem to be linked somehow ) I have found that if I turn the engine off/ then on again, it usually sorts those out and all is well. I do know there is an issue with the alternator regulator, as the whole electrical system 'pulses'. This was noticeable with the headlights, but amazingly when I replaced the standard H4 bulbs with some new LED H4s, ( these are literally brilliant !!) the headlights did not 'pulse'.

I am very pleased with the car, although I know there are some issues, but as mentioned previously, I know the 1.9 Mjet engine as it is the same as the Alfa, and that has done over 150,000 hard miles, including 2 track days and a trip to Monaco !

Do you have a link for the H4 led bulbs? Are you not getting any errors with them?

Re the H4 LED bulbs, this should be the link....hopefully !

Not sure if I have done this properly, but if you put this into the ebay search bar you should get there...!

NIGHTEYE H4 9003 HB2 LED Headlight Bulb Light

They are brighter than HIDs but much easier to install, and can be reverted back to standard halogens quickly.

They do not put an error message up as they are Canbus bulbs. Please note that they have a small fan for cooling and this may be a concern as there is not much room if you want to re-fit the dust caps. They do go back on but it's a tight fit. And I have put my headlight setting on a low as possible ( No.3) and adjusted them manually as well, just so that they are not a concern for other drivers.

I shall probably restore the halogens nearer the MOT... :)

Interesting to hear about the H4 LEDs. What is the beam pattern on them like? My Halogens had a decent beam pattern. My HIDs seem to be okay, as seen below. I still need to put the second one in and then I'll really be able to tell. Have you got photos of your LED ones? They're very cheap.

Sorry not got any pics of my LEDS. I am considering getting some H7s for my Alfa 156 dipped bulbs : i work shifts and do a lot of night driving.

Fancy buying from me some red Forge Motorsport silicone coolant hoses including stainless steel jubilee clamps thrownin for free? They are a brand new set new and usually cost £137 for hoses £25 for clamps. Easy to install only £100 including delivery to you. They have a lifetime warranty also. Bargain let me know before they go.
Cheers
