Hi guys first post so be kind, the fifth gear in my 1.4L 07 grande punto has stopped working. The car goes into fifth however whenever I try apply gas or release the clutch it pops straight out and makes a horrific grinding noise, I'm struggling as one mechanic said clutch and the other said gearbox. Anyone had any experience with this? Any help will be muchly appreciated!:)

Look for any slack in the GB command cables, @ the GB itself and Under the car @ selection lever. If cable has too much 'play' the gear might not be fully engaged so would pop-off as soon as some power is required...

Are they the linkage cables?

Yep, cables themselves usually have no problem but their ends connectors and/or fixings does ...

With engine running, clutch disengaged (pedal down) and park brake ON, have a look (better be 2 persons) HOW the levers works at the GB when your helper engage the gears sequentially: one cable will select the group, 1-2, 3-4 or 5-R, the other cable will engage the 1-3-5 or 2-4-R. Once the GB is in 5th gear, try to push further (by hand) the corresponding actuator in the same direction it came from 4th, if you can do that, the cable has probably too much slag. Gently engage the clutch: the gear should 'stay in' and the engine stall... If that works like this, you'll have to figure out where the excessive play comes from and fix it !
