Hello All,
Noticed my rear left caliper binding yesterday, making a racket and getting pretty hot. Took it off to see if there was anything that needed freeing up. Caliper was sticking slightly so freed it off as best I could (new caliper probably needed as dust boot was perished but that's a job for another day).
Wound the piston back (needle nosed pliers by the way to wind and retract it, makes the job a lot easier and much less swearing). retracted the piston all the way back as I have done with every other disc/pad job I've done and reassembled.
Pumped the pedal a few times with the engine running and the pedal was very spongy (to the point there was next to no braking until your foot's in the firewall), for the first two pumps, then normal pedal pressure resumed. The problem is, is that this keeps happening every time under braking, you have to pump the pedal three times in order to get a firm pedal.
Once the pedal is firm, braking is fine and the there is no 'creep' downwards so i don't believe master cylinder is at fault. However, leave the pedal for 3-4 seconds and it's spongy as hell again until it's pumped. It feels very much like the brakes need bleeding but as I haven't undone any hydraulic union I'm baffled as to how I could have introduced air in the system.
Thankfully it's a second car at the minute so it's not going anywhere until it's solved. I'll start with a brake bleed, I've not done this on the Punto recently and not looking forward to it as a couple of bleed nipples are looking pretty rusty. So before I potentially end up snapping them off, I'd be interested to hear anyone else's thoughts on what could be the issue? Does the piston itself need adjutment?
Thanks in advance!
Dave
