Hello!

So I'm new here and I've been looking around for some info on typically loose parts on the grande punto t jet.

As soon as I hit about 50mph I get this very annoying noise like a shuddering sound which I thought was the wheel bearings.

I had them changed (expensively) and the noise is still there.

Anybody know of anything I can check body wise that might be causing this increasingly annoying noise?

The car has only done 55000 miles and before I start modding I want it to run sans problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

worrying! I'm sure I would feel those things in the ride though and shes fine handling wise. I thought it might be loose fairing somewhere or heat shielding but I don't know where to look really. Maybe I'm gonna have to pay for a diagnosis. Car is getting expensive fast.

Only happening at 50 and more, so definitely related to car speed, not engine... Did you get the 4 bearings replaced ? If you locate the noise at the front it can come from the transmission (bad) :-(

Regards, Bernie

Driven home tonight and am 99.9% certain it's coming from the rear of the car. It is there at lower speeds but a lot less volume. As far as I can tell it's coming from the top of the car. Very strange like wind noise? It's hard to pin point as I'm driving.

Is the noise still there if you get it in neutral?

Well... I haven't checked as I'm normally on the motorway when I'm doing that kind of speed. I'll check and post back.

Hi Wayn,
I guess Cmos 's asking if the noise is still present in neutral when driving on the highway, right Cmos ?
So have a ride when no much trafic, reach the speed where the sound appears, go in neutral and tell us is annoying sound's still there. If it disappears, probably the gearbox, if it stays, probably the differential or hubs, or any other power train part. As Cmos said, it's hard to tell from here, one have to narrow-down the possibilities and finaly find the culprit; noise isn't that easy to fix (such as earthing BTW :)

OK just been out. Sound started around 40 and kept on with the car in neutral.

It really does sound like it's coming from above not below the car. I've taken the aerial off but that didn't work.

I really appreciate all your help.

3 door or 5 door? My 1.4 8v is a three door and silent compared to my five door T-Jet, loads of wind noise that I thought was an issue at first. killed some of it by sealing up all holes in insulation behind door cards and tweaking door and window seals. Back bearings done on mine, still have noise, could it be rear disks compared to drums?

Ben

3 door mate. My 1.4 16v had about the same wind noise. Mirrors I think. I've got some time tomorrow so I'm going to investigate. Maybe find a Guinea pig to sit in the back or drive the car to get some more ideas. Also gonna be upgrading sound system next week so will be applying dynamat to various cavities. Thing is she drives nice so I dont think it's mechanical (wishful thinking).

Door seals ?
Rear spoiler lose ?

Have the door seals (well) tape covered by the guinea pig while you're in the car and go for a ride, do the same with other joints (back lateral window), rear spoiler junction with roof, each at a time. If it's an aerodynamical noise You'll eventually find where it comes from...

Alternative solution: increase the stereo volume !! (sorry Snails ;-)

If someone helped You here fix or understand your issue, hit the thanks button, it's free !!

One other possibility :
Tires.
Especially if you have winter tires, or if they are getting a bit old 4 years+.
Storing tires in wrong conditions, not fully inflated, in sunlight, too much heat etc can cause the tire to go out of round, or to get a bit harder on one side than the other (especially with heat/sunlight)
They tend to make a noise something between wind noise and bearing noise.

Rear tires noise will get amplified in the boot and will get bounced around as it goes through the C and D pillars.

Also get under the car and make sure the plastic wheel arches are on tight and no bolts/clips are missing. Same thing for the other under car plastics.

As speed increases they tend to flap more => more noise

Tires were suggested in my 1st reply, if I understand well "shuddering sound" (French is my native language), it's a vibrating / shakying / trembling noise, am I right here ?
If so I think the aerodynamic theory is the correct one: plastics stuff underneath badly tend to get lose (and usually finish on the higway) seems a good candiate...
