Hi guys, I'm new here. I'm always using this incredible site when I've got stuck with my grande punto.
But for once I cannot find a solution!
Basically, my punto will only bump start. (Went to look to buy working fine, next day turn up with the money and bam. Doesn't start. Took the chance and got it a bit cheaper)
Checked earths, battery, fuses, relays, connections etc. No go.
My gut feeling is that it's the ECU.
Now my question is, how does one go about replacing it?
From what I can gather on Google, I need another ECU, ignition, and a proxy alignment ?! Can I do this myself guys? If ANYONE has some guidance on how I go about it please share it would be much, much appreciated.
thank you for your time to read this.

Hi. ECU failure is pretty rare. Far more likely to be a basic electrical fault.

So youve done the basics..how about the contactor ring on the ignition barrel. Thatll stop the starter from running-no signal power

Hi Shelly and welcome,

can you tell us WHAT Grande Punto ?
Ever considered learning about your car ?
There is an excellent eLearn iso on the site (thnks to Mishu for uploading it - waiting for others...) that contains TONS of information, i.e in the Fault Diagnosis section; here is an excerpt from the Electrical section, related to your issue...

Regards, Bernie.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF it bump starts then it's 99% not the ECU.
Get some starting cables and run them between the engine and the negative battery lead. and between the Gearbox and the negative battery lead.

Even if the ground cables look good they can be so corroded inside that they do not flow enough current to start.

From what you say, it does not crank over. right?????

Even if it cranks and does not start, but you can get it started by pushing it and then it runs smoothly the it's not the ECU.

Thank you for the suggestion, I will give this a go later and let you know how I get on :)

Hi Bernie, it's a 1.2 active grande punto, 2007 manual.
Thanks so much for the info, I struggle to find bits and bobs and this will help me a lot. Thanks dude.

Oh really! Okay. No it doesn't doesn't crack, just switches the ignition as it should and then nothing. Just some clicking noises coming from the relays which is why I thought it could be those. We tried a new starter too.
So get some jump leads and attach to the gearbox and the negative lead? I'll try it. Will let you know if I have success. Thanks for your advice!

YES!
I had the same symptoms on a friends 1.4 GP.
Gave me a BIG headache; I had also checked the ground cables and connections and they seems fine.
Eventually figured it out with the help of a few cables as mentioned.

covered in FAQ's at top of GP section.;)

Also, it might be worth mentioning I have a 'check power steering' message on the dash and the warning light coming on too. Power steering feels just fine when the car runs and fluid is ok.

 Grande Punto has electric power steering ... maybe you checked the fluid reservoir for something else :)

The warning light may be another symptom of a basic electrical fault (the motor not receiving the correct voltage/current).

Ahhh..of course. That would make sense. Thanks!
I had it out of the garage earlier, they said their computer couldn't talk to it ans for this reason he thinks the ECU might have blown??
I have such a headache over this bloomin car!
While I remember we also tried putting a wire from the starter motor to the battery. Still no luck.
AND i found a receipt which was tucked away for a bill of some electrical services that were made it says 'wired new relay if fault persists will need fuse box replacing'
This is why I thought by replacing the ECU, i might have some luck if I have to replace the body computer, ecu unit, locks and ignition ? I'm running out of ideas. Lord help me!

Unable to talk to the ECU is another simptom of bad ground

the wire you took to the starter is likely a 12+.

Hi Shelly, last car I saw with similar problem was a friend's VW: I won't tell all the story but my computer could not connect to ECU thru OBD port, like you said the electrical service couldn't talk to (and the car could not start). Ended-up to be the power to the fuse coil that powers the ECU that was blown... I will have a closer look to the wiring diagram behind this and tell you what fuse(s) to check... Now it's late and I'm done for today, sorry :-( let's chat tomorrow.... Cheers, Bernie

Many Thanks Bernie, I would greatly, greatly appreciate that. Hope to hear from you soon :)

Hi Shelly couldn't go to sleep without digging a bit... Here is the schematic for the starting circuit...

Hi Bernie , many thanks for this. You're a diamond! Only trouble is- I've gone to start it up today and now got even worse!!
Ignition comes on but then a warning light consisting of a car & padlock.. does anyone know what the hell has happened and what has caused this?? I seem to be losing all faith :-(

it's normal when all/some of the ECU/computers in the car do not get the correct voltages/current.

Dig you try what i mentioned with the jumper cables
any difference? even one light less on dash is huge when troubleshooting.
you can also trie another wire from the ecu metal case -body to the negative battery lead.
