hi, new to the site so not sure if im posting in the right area but any help is nice!
ive bought a 2007 grande tjet 120 with a vl36 turbo swap, im looking to make the most out of the turbo with an upgraded intercooler and exhaust.
im wondering what the options are for the intercooler, i know forge do one but are there any other options? would the intercooler from the punto grande abarth be an upgrade?

regarding the exhaust does it essentially need to be decat or would a free flowing back box do the job?
i would then remap to suit.
thanks in advance.(y)

Both GP and AGP have the same IC.

vl36 is not a big upgrade anyway but the forge IC is much bigger/cooler.

About the exhaust, a free cat back is always better no need to remove the cat.

cheers guys! with the airtec cooler and im guessing a sports cat, what sort of power can these t jets acheive? what would be a safe bhp to run at with it being my daily aswell as my new toy:rolleyes:
thanks :worship:

Hi Alex,

I have the vl36, forge fmic, powerflow cat back exhaust (Was going to get a sports cat but too expensive at the time, so stuck with the standard cat). Also have a forge induction kit and after being remapped I achieved 187.8bhp.

thats a really good figure considering these are only 1400 turbos!
do you think it needs to be forge or airtec, just looking at pricing myself and its going to get costly. would a good quality universal intercooler work as well?
also how do you find driving the t jet with the increased power, the previous owner mentioned it had been mapped before but had lots of wheelspin in 1st and 2nd  cheers

Yeah I was very surprised was only expecting 180, nevermind closer to 190!

To be honest I have heard good things about airtec so if you want to then go for them. I went with forge because I had the money at the time and was in no rush to get everything I needed to complete the set up I wanted before remapping.
Personally I wouldn't go universal purely because airtec and forge have made these specifically for the t-jet so should be the best for them. But if you have the same dimensions as the forge or airtec it would probably be fine.

As for driving it with the added power as expected it's lot of fun! Yes it will spin in 1st and 2nd on wet roads if you have your foot planted so be careful especially when you just have it mapped as it will surprise you how much the difference is.

Would also suggest upgrading the brakes with the added power.

anyone got links to other intercoolers that would fit/ can be made to fit without too much hassle?
i found this but im new to this so im not sure if its any good
ebay item number -->>291797367473 (cant post links yet)
same for a catback exhaust if anyone can help.
cheers guys :slayer:

Isn't putting in NA cams + remap a much better improvement than hoping to get a little more flow with a catback or a few less degrees with a different intercooler?

im not sure:confused:
i guess cam replacement would be costly?
im just looking to change the exhaust for better flow and a bigger intercooler both to go with the turbo upgrade, heard stories of the standard intercooler not being up to the job when looking for 180hp? heatsoked? the standard exhaust and fmic are only good for around 155hp?
any help welcomed (y)(y)

I'm still looking into it myself.
Replacing the cams is costly, but a lot cheaper if you do it while doing the cambelt kit, so you could consider it if you have that coming up soon.
You already have the turbo of the 150+hp versions, it's only logical to match that with the cams, and even more logical to go a step further as the NA cams are better than the 150hp ones and will probably cost you less on the used market.

I have my doubts about the standard fmic being unsuitable above 155hp, the Abarth 500's have to do it with a much less ideal setup both for intake as for intercooler.
I wouldn't bother unless you're aiming at 200+hp with a bigger/customised turbo.
I contacted a company doing TD04 swaps and they even keep the stock intercooler in projects beyond 250hp.

The standard exhaust will be a restriction, but I wouldn't call 180hp really extreme or a vl36 a big turbo...
A flowier exhaust will most definitely be a LOT louder and also cost a lot of money if you go for good quality and a less restrictive catalytic converter.
Personally I wouldn't bother unless your stock exhaust is showing signs it won't last long anymore, then I'd do a 2.5" catback. (I'll even try to go beyond 200hp on a stock exhaust to keep it stealth)

Do you already have upgraded injectors?

thanks for the detailed replies!
im aware that the td04 would be the next step up from the vl36/38, but then i would have to look into a new manifold/ downpipe to cope with the added pressure? plus im not sure on 200hp+ with standard clutch etc.
im installing the intercooler as a precautionary measure really, and the catback to give a nice sound and better flow than standard, maximising the potential of the turbo when its mapped.
i was thinking of keeping the standard exhaust before the map and continuing with the map anyway, but then if i later decide i want a raspier exhaust or that its holding me back power wise then i would have to pay for it to be mapped again.
as for injectors i would like to upgrade them actually, what is the best size to go for on the tjet?
thanks:worship:

If you already have the vl36 I wouldn't recommend going td04 but make the best of what you've got indeed.

Torque is what kills gearboxes and clutches, as long as you keep it not much above 300Nm and don't launch like a bat out of hell from standstill at every green light, you'll be fine.

It sounds like you will be doing the catback anyways, so I would recommend doing:
- a good 2.5" catback
- Bosch EV14 380cc@3bar injectors
- remap

I would keep the intercooler for last instead of the catback, the intercooler won't make the big difference so it's better to do what does make a difference (vl36, catback, injectors) before remapping, so you don't have to do it twice.
You can always do the intercooler later, although I don't understand why you're so fascinated by it as it will only make a slight difference at tight twisty tracks.

are they the injectors from the vxr?
not exactly fascinated by the intercooler, but id rather get the catback and intercooler mapped in together.
most of my driving is tight twisty b- roads, and hey the intercooler will look awesome.
cambelt due soon so may look into the 1.4 8v cams?
thanks as always:idea:

Mapping with the already quite good stock fmic or with an upgraded one won't make a difference as a good dyno has a big fan blowing in the grille and you're not shooting 250+hp numbers.
Of course if the budget allows to upgrade it without compromising more important mods before mapping: go for it, get and intercooler with 60mm connections and change the tubing as well while you're at it (stock is 50mm), as more flow will do more for you than a couple degrees.

I have no idea which cars are delivered with the 380cc@3bar injectors, I bet Google will answer that.

You need the 1.4 16v NA cams, definitely do that before mapping.

I'm at exactly the same stage with my build as you. I have just purchased a upgraded fmic, however I went for the option to build in a universal Mishimoto fmic. It comes with the 60mm pipes so I'm hoping the greater flow will help in my quest.
I mocked it all up today and will now be ordering the fmic pipes to fit.
Will be following this thread and helping if possible

thats good mate!
ive done the same really but i think it was a toyosport intercooler due to be delivered at some point this week. i ordered hoses from ash hoses on ebay, seem to be a good choice. 57 to 51mm i beleive.

have you fitted exhaust or any plans?
keep us up to date

Mines had a host of up grades along the way. its running the ve36 turbo with a custon 2.5" turbo back exhaust system. its had a remap previous and the boost kicks in at about 2k and peaks at about 19psi.
Ive also uprated all the brakes with ferodo pads and ebc d/g discs, braided lines and then rebled in 5.1 fluid. Next step is going to be N/A cams and injectors but we will see where we are after the fmic has beeen installed.:slayer:

did you get the intercooler piped up and fitted? how diffcult of a job was it:p
