Well, it had to happen sooner or later! Daughter is away at College with the car, several hundred miles from us, and it won't start. She got some of her mates to bump start it and it runs fine once it has been started but when she turns the key, there is nothing. She sent me a vide from her phone and I THINK I can hear the solenoid cut in but the starter itself won't turn.

Now, this car has "form" when it comes to that! It did something very similar last April too! That resulted in me fitting a reconditioned starter (and then subsequently finding in wasn't the starter at all! It was the main earth cable from the battery to the body! That has now been replaced, and the car has been starting fine ever since.

I've asked her to try a jump lead from the battery negative to the engine block and another from the battery negative to the body. Neither has worked (even both at the same time hasn't worked), so I'm now looking for suggestions as to what might be the problem, please?!

It could be the battery with the latest cold snap, ned to see if jump leads off another battery/car works,
If not the while tring to crank hit starter slightly may work, if not its a test light to see if cracking feed to solenoid.
Get more I depth from here.

Thanks Sppon. Unfortunately, jump starting made no difference. Realistically, I don't think my daughter would be able to reach down to the top of the starter to hit it with anything. I've tried that in the past and accessibility isn't great down the back of the engine. I've arranged for her to take it to a local garage on Wednesday so I'll have to see what they say.
