I have a 1.6 jtd gp and when I parked up after driving home from work (22.30) the engine cooling fan was on, cool night, didn't drive fast, coolant level is just below the max and the temperature gauge at the normal level in the middle. Anyone got any ideas what's wrong I've noticed it a couple of times but didn't think much of it until tonight.

Did you have the AC on?

TBO, if the gauge is reading normal, and the coolant level is fine, then i wouldn't worry about it. The cooling fan is just doing it's job (certainly the norm on our petrol engine brethren)

Does it have a DPF? If so, you might have shut down when it was part way through doing a regeneration of the DPF. Under those conditions, the exhaust will be STINKING hot, so they run the cooling fan for 5 minutes or so after shutdown to prevent a load of heat buildup under the engine bay and below the car. (I don't know that for a fact with the Punto, but other makes of car do it and it's quite common).

Mine does have a dpf, when mine is going through a regen the yellow triangle warning light comes on then goes off when it's done.
