Technical HeaterBlower, out of ideas to fix it.

Hi Everyone

First time posting here, hopefully I've got it right. I have a 2007 Punto Grande Active 1.2. Recently bought. The heater/blower does not switch on.

I have tried the following.

a) Tested the cable that plugs into the blower with a voltmeter, and it showed power when i switched it on/off from the dash.
b) replaced the resistor under the glove box, didn't work.
c) replaced the whole blower unit (new), still doesn't work.

I have not checked any fuses. Nothing i can find online/in manual tells me which fuse box/fuse position the blower unit is connected to. However if there is voltage in the cable, then surely the fuse is not at fault? If anyone knows where and which position its supposed to be that would be great.

I'm out of ideas.. any help would be hugely appreciated.

if you still have the old blower try and find out wich are the wires that make the blower turn.
then put power to your blower and get it working.

Then you know you have a electrical problem.
You need to check power coming to the blower with a load on (something like a 12v light bulb).
You need to check for +12v and for a good ground.

Thanks, I'll give that a go. do i need to find a 12v power supply, or can i use the car battery with crocodile clips?

Have finally gotten round to testing the blower motor. I procured some alligator grips and tested the old, now replaced blower on the car battery.

Damn thing worked. I guess that means I have an electrical problem.

Should I take it to the shop now?

If so.. given that i bought it for £1400, how much is too much before it makes no sense to get repaired? Its a 2007 1.2 model, with 95K on the clock, runs fine.

Just had the same problem with daughters punto grande, have a very close look at the connection from the wiring loom to the resistor pack, separate the wiring loom from the resistor pack and check the connector pins for arcing and the wiring for signs of overheating, and wiggle it about and it may work, pretty sure that is where you will find the problem.

if the loom is past it..,( will pass 12 volts - but not enough current to power a motor)
it's cheaper to get the original Corsa loom for GM , than to get the FIAT badged one..

I have just bought a connector repair kit and new resistor pack from ebay

Easy and cheap repair for the resistor here, don't forget that this usually blows due to strain on the motor, bushings get dry and need cleaning and lubing.

I have taken it the shop. The mechanic says its a wiring/loom fault. I couldn't see any damage on it personally. TBH, i just wanted it fixed.. £160.. I hope im not being mugged!

you're paying @£60 an hour labour , and the £30 for the part

The problem, and it affects a lot of cars with Renault Meganes being a repeat offender, is caused by the pins on the connector being too small to take the current so they overheat & melt the plastic. If you look at the replacement connector and new resistor you will see that they now spread the load over 2 pins instead of 1 for the feed & earth.
