I started the car yesterday all normal, went to the dump and when I tried to start the car nothing, fuel gauge, temp gauge, rev counter and speedo all just flickered, a clicking sound came from the engine bay but nothing, tried again the mileage started flashing. got a bump start all seemed ok drove ok for couple of miles then when I turned the car off it did exactly the same. Auto Aid came and diagnosed flat battery, he jumped it and drove off I drove to Halfords but steering went heavy then ok, all sorts of warning lights came on on dash, car drove very juddery under 4000 revs. replaced battery engine warning light still on, when started the engine dies unless I rev it but wont idle. when started it does not sound right.

Hi, :)
sounds like its not getting a charge from the alternator..,

surely the AUTO AID checked that..??

get a volt meter on battery terminals should be 12 volts with engine OFF
and 14 Volts with engine running ON / Running

Im currently having the same problem.
Whatever you do buy a genuine alternator.
Ive just put on one made by RTX from eurocarparts and it doesnt work.
Have been advised that the ecu doesnt like non genuine alternators.

Took the car for a 5 mile drive engine light still on and fuel gauge reading empty even though full tank. When started it was lumpy and smelled of petrol. After drive turned off and restarted engine light still on but petrol smell had gone and engine idled without any help. Took it out again and did a bump start down a hill engine fired up and no more warning lights. All seems ok have tested voltage and all ok 12volts without engine and 14.2 with engine
Seems to be running smoothly and still averaging 49 to gallon ?

I'd advise keeping the meter with you, and a set of jump leads..
the Main EARTH CABLE from battery to engine and chassis can break down internally,

IF you get the dead / clicking again;

1, test battery still has 12 Volts - less = it's a battery charging issue

2, fit BLACK jump lead - from BLACK negative battery terminal to bare metalwork of engine..this may well help the power get to the starter
