Hi all

The check engine light came on in my GP the other day, so I bought an OBD scanner to see what was up. When plugging in and turning the ignition on, the scanner is displaying "connection error". The scanner works absolutely fine on the other cars in my household - a VW Up! and Hyundai IX35. Are there any special requirements I should be aware of for the Fiat or any common issues that affect this? Any help would be much appreciated. (After doing a bit of reading it appears the GP uses CAN protocol, which this scanner supports.)

To give as much info as possible:
Engine is a 1.4 8v
As far as I'm aware the ECU has never been reflashed or anything along those lines
Scanner I'm using is a brandless U480 from ebay
All fuses are ok
In the socket itself pins 1,4,5,6,9,14 and 16 are present
A telematics device was plugged into the socket from November last year until June this year.

A bit of insight into the check engine light issue: Sometimes when I switch the car on (from cold) the cooling fan starts immediately, and fast idle does not occur, engine speed dropping straight to 800 rpm. On top of that, basically every time I start the car the temperature gauge goes straight to the red then drops back down again. This is all making me think its temperature sensor related but I want to test properly to be certain that is the issue.

Thanks
