Hey guys,

I've had a slight problem recently with my fiat grande punto 1.4 16v. On the odd occasion(not every time) theres a whirring noise coming from the engine when i initially start it up and it gets worse when the accelerator is pressed. After a minute or so of turning her off and on again the noise just dissapears.

About a month ago it started so i took it to the garage and they fitted a new fan belt and said that was the reason

The noise came back and i ignored it. i had a new battery fitted in the mean time and the noise didnt return for a few weeks so i thought it was fine.

Started her up the other day and the sound returned, and its happened roughly 3 times in the past week.

Ive attacthed a video so you can see for yourself.

Any help as to what it could be would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Lewis

that's weird. What if you just leave the engine running?

It's something related to alternator - a/c - tensioner.

Can you test with a/c on-off if there is a difference?

Starter motor pinion not disengaging? Mine started it 2 day ago, stop and start a few times and it stops! I will take out starter and look at pinion and shaft.

Mine had a noise very similar to this (especially when accelerating). It didn't always happen, and disappeared after a few minutes of driving. Eventually, the battery died and the garage fitted a new alternator - been fine since.
