Technical Using a code reader?

Do you turn the car on, then turn the laptop on and plug in the code reader?

Or do you turn on the laptop, plug in the reader and then turn the car on?

Or do you follow some other sequence entirely?

Hi,
I tend to connect the cables, then switch on the vehicles ignition,

basic code readers are powered by the actual OBD port..

last thing I want is any kind of power spike to an ECU

Makes sense. I have tried the reader, but not got it to actually read yet! It's now too cold and dark to sit in a car trying to make a laptop talk to a usb port - I'll try again in the morning...
