Hello,

The problem is that every now and then on ignition (probably one in every 10-20 starts) the engine doesn't seem to turn over and makes a horrible and scary grinding noise.

It seems to happen at random. When it does happen I just turn off the ignition and back on again and usually it starts normally after that. That said sometimes it does it multiple times in a row. For example, it happened three times in a row this morning.

It's just annoying more than anything and I'm worried that it could be damaging something.

If anyone has any ideas on what could be wrong or even how to fix it I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

just a thought....is it getting more noticable as the weather gets colder?...if it is check the condition of your battery. it could be failing, holding a decent voltage but not enough amps to turn the engine...

get a drop test done..

I too have this exact problem, but I'm greeted with a 'Radiator temperature critical' warning message everytime the noise is made, even when it's cold.

Hi, :)
it's all down to a lack of electrical power..,

the starter isn't permanently "connected" to the big gear that turns the engine over,
the starter spins FAST - and then the spinning small driver gear shoots forward to engage with the gear on the engines flywheel,
it's when this gear doesn't move far enough with the small gear spinning that you get the  Grinding..:(

a poor electrical supply can do this..that's why you can get random error messages too,

as stated get the battery tested,
you are looking for 12 Volts with engine off, and 14 Volts with engine running ( power from alternator)

Thanks a lot for your help. I'll definitely get my battery checked out.

I haven't been getting any lights on my dashboard display though.

Hey,

I got myself a new battery and the starter motor hasn't done the dodgy grinding noise since.

Thanks for the help!

Just in case anyone reads this with similar symptoms.. Mine was teeth on flywheel. Had this changed and all fine now

I had this on some engine starts, culprit was my battery.

Got it replaced and everything is well

Same problem. Can you guys recommend what battery I should buy? There's so many on offer and I have no clue!

When having the battery tested get them to test between the gear box casing and the battery + pole.. Compare the two results if the one between the gear box is poorer and the battery is healthy replace the "
earth strap" ( black wire between battery chassis to gear box

as andy monty said the earth strap wire breaks inside and the lock and car sign on dash and squeal all are tell tale signs i listened to him and my car is great now :)(y) btw halfords sell a earth strap for less than 6 pounds hope it helps ...
