My Grande Punto 1.4 16V 2008 is playing up a bit.

For a while, upon starting the car there's been a loud whining noise when accelerating and when in gear. It goes away once the car has warmed up after a few minutes of driving.

Now, the battery light has come on and the power steering cuts out (making the wheel very difficult to turn) when at low speeds.

I'm guessing the whining noise is probably related to the battery dying. Is there any easy troubleshooting that can be done before taking it into the garage?

Hi, the whining is the belt slipping over the alternator pulley,
so;

1, the alternator is probably working HARD
2,the PAS is electric - so using LOTS of power
3,the battery could be getting a LOW charge

DIY = get a volt meter,
check battery voltage with everything switched OFF - should be at least 12 Volts,
then start engine, and test Battery again,
should be at least 14Volts - power from alternator
